He was killed in a train wreck at Vaughan, Mississippi, in 1900. In death his hand clutched the whistle of the Cannonball Express.

Fetterman had his 80 men but it didnt work out quite the way he said it would. Crazy horse suckered Fetterman into an ambush. Red Cloud and Roman Nose along with 2000 warriors were waiting for Fetterman, him and his troopers lasted about 20 minutes.
