From a site used by the military 1810-1817, but also used for farming later. What are these?

I believe they are called "ear nuts"

A lot of times these were threaded onto the cross rod that pulled the sides of the wagon in and clamped the tailboard in.

Ear nuts? Thats a new one :) Whats the difference between Beer Nuts and Deer Nuts? Beer Nuts are $1.39 and Deer nuts are under a buck.
