We were supposed to travel to try new land, but decided to check our Fav Field. We got there & noticed he had flatted down 1/4 of the field. As we had kicked a hawker off here the other week, we decided to beat him & others to the finds. The objective was to cover the entire flatten area.

The cold wind & rain tried to drive us off the field but we finished the area in 4.5 hours (9 man hours). They are welcome to help themselves to whats left :tongue3: We kept the discrim low & sucked off nearly every iron nail & tiny pieces of lead.

Dad's first signal was a sterling silver 1920s brooch (pin). Then it went slow for an hour & we wondered if we had made the right choice.

Things picked up & we finished with 8 roman coins (4 each) taking our yearly total to 202. Close to last years 234 but some way from the 300 target.

I found a silvered roman coin which will probably be the closest I will get to a Roman Silver this year (Dad had all 3 & the target of 10 is looking impossible).

I got a cut halfpenny hammered of Henry III (Shortcross)
Part of a Roman key handle
17th Century Token
1837 Farthing
bits...

I've already cleared most of the thimbles out of this field :D

It is the same bloke as yours but a different reverse.

Well done as usual cru!

Nice finds it must be fun pulling all that history out of the dirt, love all the buttons.

Hi Cru, glad to see you also work underwater ::) The brooch is very nice for sure, don't see your 'silvered' roman, but its there someplace. You guys seem to be cleaning out your fav field quickly, I know that happens. After intensive searching most things will be gone in 6 years, but sometimes with deep plowing some things do come up. Our fav field is now really peedered out. Where we used to find many finds, we can only find one or two, with 4 of us searching. Last year the only find was a roman weight that I found (one of those lead ones), but this year surprisingly we found more, a few hammereds and I found a real nice pipe stamper. Although those things were found, it took 4 experienced guys about 3 hours to search the field. Not bad, but we had other interesting fields to search.

I finally went out searching, just like you and Cru'dad, in the rain and wind, it was cool also. Had to take my wife and our niece to see her father in Friesland (one of the oldest parts of Holland, where you can also find Roman) and since I didn't want to sit around all day listening to their chatter I called a friend of mine to see if he wanted to detect with me. Well as it turns out he was going to Belgium to search with a group of guys, but he gave me directions to a field where I could find stuff, it was always a grass field by a village, and had been plowed last year for the first, the corn was now off and the field raked, so sounded good. When I got there, after talking to the farmer, I noticed it was nice sandy loomy earth, which was a nice change after working that grass (concrete) field with Shaun7 and yourself!

Found a bunch of stuff also, just like you guys, but nothing (I think) for my 1st finds cabinet. The stuff is still in my car, we got back at about 2300 and didn't want to clean out the car in the rain and snow. But this afternoon I will load a photo and see what I got...

YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME SHAUN!!! I am not dumb (or I hope not anyway!). YEA YEA YEA, I SAW your 'digger' kid, don't mess around with me! I just don't know how you got Cru to dig all your holes for you, especially in that soil (SOIL??? Concrete). I guess I dug about 10 holes there, my shovel was bent! I stood on my shovel a number of times and wiggled and it did NOT go in more than a inch. Because I am so old Shaun I really
forgot how I even made the holes anymore. I think that place has always been grass, it was sooooo hard. And then nice signals, dig for 10 minutes and get all the big lumps out and finally find a bullet.... yea that was fun fun and fun!

Yes, also about the Roman coin! I saw you dancing around and thought that you sat down while Cru finished a hole for you, and maybe got some ants up your pants or something, now I know it was the coin. Congrad by the way!

Your third point, coming to Holland I answered sometime ago in another message. Don't plan on finding much here, pity, there is just not much to find. Holland in the early (roman-middle ages) was mostly water and swamp, and almost no people. There are places where people lived, and there the hunting is much better, but DON'T compare the hunting in Holland to hunting in England. Its like comparing a worn copper coin to a gold hammered. Yesterday I searched for 5 hours here in one of the places where it was dry in that period, FRIESLAND. My finds will be on the site tomorrow I think!

But if you want to 'drink' coffee at the coffee shops, or visit the RL district (you know what RL stands for don't you?), or eat some nice chips with mayo do come over and look around......

That field has been ploughed for many years. It only was put too grass last year. Shows what the soil is like in my area. :P

Nice digs
It sounds like its a little easier to dig in the rain considering how hard the soil is?

I`m guessing theres not near as much trash deposited on the ground than there is here.

At least there wansn`t that much laying around the Ipswich area.

These fields are full of trash. It used to be an allottment. Its been detected for over 20 year by many people & I still have to empty my pouch every couple of runs.
