Got permission to hunt a cleared lot in Downtown Charleston today and can't believe the history that came out of the hole. Wasn't sure it was an actual Slave Tag till I got home and ran a toothbrush over it and started to see the number 120 on it. I thought, this is too small to be a Slave Tag. If it is one, there should be hole right here at the top. I poked it with a toothpick and there was a hole. Oh my GOD!!!!!!!! I lightly brushed it off for another minute and saw "Charleston" at the top. I still can't believe it!!!!! I can see the date ends in "2" and can kind of see the letters of what kind of job this man had but I'm not going to touch it again. It'll be professionally cleaned because my hands would never stop shaking enough to make it right. This is insane!!!

Banner find!!! Congrats!!! :occasion14:

Banner good job amazing piece of history wow

Ha.

Not going to lie- I’d probably find this, have no idea what it was, and throw it out.

Fantastic find-you are now the proud member of an elite club that I would love to be a member of. :occasion14:

Hard to say for sure but it looks like it is another "Porter" tag.

Yessir. It's a PORTER. Already had a few offers but I've never sold anything I've ever found and don't intend to start with this amazing piece of history either.... Think about it. This was worn by someone that was owned by another person that probably owned their whole family also. It truly is insane to imagine taking a horse and buggy ride around Charleston in the 1800's and seeing African Americans walking around wearing these tags just like a pet dog's tag; with the owner's info on it. There's so much history in this little square piece of metal...….

Absolutely insane find! An important reminder of a dark part of history. Truly an extremely important find, one that helps preserves the memory of a man who was forced to wear it every day. I always think historically significant finds like that are an honor to find. Banner for sure!

I can't believe this hasn't had more replies, not to mention not up on the Banner, finding a slave tag is more rare than finding a gold coin but it seems that every gold coin found has been on the Banner, not that a gold coin shouldn't be up there it's just strange that this tag hasn't made it up there!

Maybe the tag needs to be cleaned up and a better photo edited in to the first post so it's look's Banner worthy???

this is cool, I can't wait to see it all cleaned up and maybe learn about the history of the person who it "belonged" to
