??? Figure

I found this hockey player figure, while metal detecting today (16 May 2010). It appears to be made of solid brass and is very heavy. The paint is remarkable well preserved considering having been buried in the ground. My thoughts are it might be a hood ornament from a Zamboni machine as it was found not far from a hockey arena. I'd like to hear others thoughts and opinions on the matter. Thanks for looking.

I've never seen one like this but would agree with BCH because of the size of the end of the hockey stick. Plus the length of the shaft at the bottom of the figure. It looks to me like it was made to spin.

BINGO! BCH is correct, it is a player from a coin-operated mechanical hockey game from the 1950's. When I was a kid, our family would go to Buckroe Beach in Virginia, and the arcade there had one. Of course I was a mere child and had to stand on a wooden box to play. Great find, Breezie

My first thoughts were along the lines of the old mechanical hockey games, but this thing is solid brass and weight about 1 lb. seems a bit large and heavy for a game piece, but I could be mistaken.......

Brady: No the glass you see in the photo didn't come with it. It is a milk bottle, the base of the figure fits perfectly in to it, so I used it to hold the figure for the photo.

I agree completely with the idea that it's from an arcade game. I'm betting if you put the shaft through a hole in a board so he sits level the stick is slightly off the surface like it would need to be to allow it to turn and hit a ball. also as said already the length & size of the stick shows that this is meant to be used to swat a ball. It looks nothing like a real hockey stick and it would if it was a hood ornament or simply a statue or part of a trophy. I vaguely remember these games as a kid growing up and hanging around the arcades in Salisbury Beach Mass & Hampton NH. If you look at enough pictures of vintage acrade games I'm betting you will find this.

It would make sense to go in a Machine.... figures like this including the old soldiers were Lead! So to be brass would mean it was made to be more robust!

Psgen, I have seen this type of hockey player in person; basically, I've lived the history. There were only 2 players (not 10 or 12), one on each end defending the goal. These were 'penny' arcade machines. I'll see if I can find a pic the hockey machine. Below is a pic of coin op mechanic basketball game from the same era. Note the size of the 2 players. Breezie

Not the same, but this old 1968 Chicago Hockey Coin-op arcade machine used heavy figures similar to the one found. These also just spun around in one spot.

Yep, Snoopy, the one you posted is exactly like the one I used to play as a kid. Since it was made in 1940, it already had some age on it when I played it. I'm NOT that old; lol Breezie
