Been waiting for this to happen for a while. My silver finds lately have been beat up, worn out and holed. I got one to be proud of today. It was an 1860 house site that is now a cornfield. There is still a bit of dirt on it since I didn't want to clean it off too vigorously. I didn't think it had a mintmark until I looked at the photo just now, but it does. It is an 1875-S. The mint looks like someone tried to rub it off it is so faint, but it is there. It's good to finally get one in really nice shape and no hole to boot!

Then I've got this. I thought it was a button because of the hump in the center. I thought it was a broken off shank. It looked smooth on both sides to me. After noticing it was the same diameter as a Matron large cent, I started scrutinizing it with side light. I was finally able to make out the shadow of a left facing bust. I could see the chin and bottom of the bust, but I couldn't make out the hair bun on the right. The Matron and the Braided hair both have one. I got thinking what else could it be and looked up a Capped Bust (Classic Head). That was it. That's why there was no bun. I can now make out the band on the bottom of the cap and the one on the reverse, now that I knew where to look. Some careful light work with Andres pencils revealed it is an 1813 Capped Bust cent, my first of this type.
