finally broke into 1800's silver...

But not the way I wanted to lol. Had a quick hunt before I had to take the truck in for its first oil change. Went to an old house that I have permission on. I only gridded off a small area and concentrated on that. Got a nice solid Loud tone. Down 10" was a big musketball. good sign! Dug several junk targets, then got a deep scratchy 10-36 on the etrac. Dug about 8" and pulled out a nice little initialed sugar or cream silver spoon. JG JG JG hallmark. I'll post a picture when I get home. HH!!

Sweet! You do nothing by half measures!

Nice piece of Silver Ace, probably better than a lot of coins that "could" have come out.
You might even have some luck finding out who the maker is.

Thanks Rick. Once I get the honey-do list done, I'm going to start researching. It's a small town, so it shouldn't be too hard.

I'm thinking 1840-1850's.
But wrong I a lot think.
Is it your first silver silverware?
Carl

Check this site out.... I didn't see an exact match, but it's a start.

Birmingham Makers Marks - JC-JG

Thank you very much for the link! Yes, it's my first silver spoon. I have a ton of plated cutlery, so I was pretty pumped to see a silver one in the hole!

That must of felt good when you dug it and felt it with your bare hands, I bet that silver has a little heft to it, nice find.

Love your spoon Ace - nice find! I did a quick search of the JG hallmark, and the only thing I could find was a silversmith named John Gibbs from RI. But he was in business from the mid-to-late 1700s, and I don't believe your spoon is that old. Here's a link that you might want to check out:

John Gladding Gibbs, born 20 Oct 1751, died 6 Oct 1797

Notice that it's J.G

I think that it might not be English, possible US??

Very nice find, congrats! You will find 50 plated utensils for every silver one ;-)

Thanks for the link! I don't think it's that old either. I did pull a 1753 coin from there tho. I'm going to research the initials. It's a very small town...actually smaller than a town, it's a parish. If I can get a match to the original owners of the home, that will help date it. I'll keep you posted

Yes because you have their initials on the front.

That is a beautiful find.

Exactly CRUSADER

Gorgeous silver spoon, man!
