Finally knocked one off the bucket list!

After a soaking rain yesterday, it only made sense to get out today. I took a long drive to a park in a town just outside of Boston, where I've had very good results in the past. First couple of good signals were an old wheat and an Indian, then I got a very high tone that was giving me a hard time pinpointing. I finally narrowed it down and after flipping the plug, saw a big silver rim in the dirt- I could tell it was half-dollar size. Hoping for a Barber or Seated, it ended up being my FIRST Franklin half, a 51-D. I've been hunting for close to 30 years and have found several Walkers, Barbers and Seated halves, but the Franklin has always eluded me, until today!

Nabbed an 1893 Barber dime a while later, to go along with 1881 and 1890 Indians and 10 wheats, one a 1909. A long drive, but worth the trip to check one off the list!

I got my one and only Franklin this summer. It is a simple but beautiful coin.

Nice finds! Went detecting with some buddies and we were door knocking. It was the end of the day and I was tired, hungry and the bugs were really starting to bite. First signal sounded like a soda can. very high. dug a hole. Couldn't find it. filled it back in. Went back a couple minutes later. What the heck was it? Dug another hole next to it. nothing. Went about desperately trying to find something as everyone had found a silver. I think I even went back to it a fourth time and just waved my coil over it. Decided I was over it and kept moving. 45 minutes later it was getting dark and my buddy swept over the hole. He knew it was mine and told me I should probably dig it. He gave me another chance. Nope... I told him I had given up and he should give it a try. He dug it and of course it was a Franklin half. I was frustrated with my self but my sour grapes moment / consolation was that I told myself I would have been really crushed if it was a barber or a reale or something! He found it fair and square good for him! I chalk it up to my own inexperience. Next time.... if it ever happens.... I'll get it!
