Maybe a bottle stopper similar to the Hutchinson Stopper.

BigCypressHunter, how many US patents are dated October 9, 1906? I'm able to search for US patents by their number, but not by date. If you've got a link to a (free) website which has the option to search US patents by their date, please post it. Thanks.

TheCannonballGuy,

For the best result of patent search by date, go to Google Patent Search. There are many options there that allow customized searches, where the Application Date or Issue Date may be included. This is by far a better tool than the search options through the US Patent Office site. :read2:

A search of October 9, 1906 patents, shows nearly 1,000 results of individual patents awarded on that date. Apparently the US Patent Office has often awarded numerous patents on particular dates, after months or years of application reviews.

Without having a more defining idea at the start of a search, of what a particular object may be a part of, even a precise patent date can be a long search through records. :icon_scratch:

The turn knobs of kerosene oil lamps have indeed often shown patent dates in circular lettering as we see on this mystery item posted above. However, the brass turn knobs of kerosene oil lamps are typically smaller (approximately dime size), and most importantly will usually have an oval slot to affix to the shaft (a round hole will not grip a round shaft, hence one would simply spin without turning anything)

My thought is this may be a game piece or token of some sort. A look at the opposite side may hold a clue.

I chunk most of mine but did have three here in the house. Also got some out in the barn still on whole lamps with pretty big knobs. But they come on shanks with square hole & round like the one in my hand also that have grooves running the length of the shaft it's mounted on.Kinda like a concrete nail would look.

Thanks for the photos Timekiller!

A square hole or serrated round hole also works for a turn knob on oil lamps. Now that you've mentioned it, I recall digging plenty of those as well. :)
As noted, a smooth round center hole just won't do as a turn knob.

With the cost of electricity these days, a fellow should maybe think twice before tossing out any of those kerosene lamp parts! :D

As CC said you can search Patent dates on the Google Patent site http://www.google.com/patents but there are a thousand issued on that date. Patents were usually granted on Tuesday. http://www.rocketcalendar.com/calendar/1906-10

A picture of the back and a side view may help. It sure looks like a lamp wick turner but if it is, I cant find it. Looking closer, it does look like the splines that Timekiller describes. How many have you found?
