Haven't posted in a little while so ...... Went to an old school that was built in 1905. Found the Large Cent 1845, Eagle Button (Navy) 1830's and the little religious medallion, 1908 Indian head and a no date buffalo head. Not much ground to cover at this school because the area has been sold off to homes in the past years, oh well need to get permission for these.

Brian,
Very nice digs! Congrats on that LC.

Great finds. The large cent and button takes the site back another 50+ years unless a student lost em after show-n-tell. Did you research if there was something on the site before 1905? Nice finds... and go find some more!

Depends on the wear on the LC.

Those coins circulated up until the turn of the century.

Button...I dunno. It looks like an iron back on it... So probably not 1830s...

All of the finds are exceptional. Well done!

As far as I know it was just farm land before.

This is where I ID'd the button : http://www.thetreasuredepot.com/cayenna/index.html

I didn't know they had different ones, ie. iron backs?

Brian

The front of the button may be the same--which is probably how you found one that looked the same, but the backmark is what makes or breaks a button's age. Many navy buttons have similiar or even identical designs for spans of 75 years or more...

The rusted iron backing on yours tells me that it is likely of 20th century manufacture, give or take. Buttons with iron backs to them weren't common up until the turn of the century--and I haven't heard of them even as early as the CW.

But even without an "oldie" on the button, that was still one heck of a hunt.

Regards,

Buckleboy

Nice finds! HH, Mike
