Hi all. This is my first post.

I'm a newbie to metal detecting, but not to this site. You folks got me going with all of your great finds.

Just received an Ace250 three days ago. Right away, I've had luck finding pennies at 2-5" in my front yard. Also found that sprinkler attachment that I've been missing.

Last night, I went to a site near town (and a major river) that was a late 1800's railroad depot. No trace of it is left, not even old foundations, so I used advice I got from this site and looked for flat areas overlooking the river.
Didn't find the coins I was hoping to find, but to my amazement found what I think is a square nail. The pics show some of the clad from my front yard as well as the nail.

Detail pic of the nail is after I broke at least 3/4" off of it trying to jiggle it around for best light. Hope you can see how the layers are separating.

I'm hoping that you'll share some of your expertise with me and let me know if this nail matches with the late 1800's time period of the site. Depth was around 4-5".

Wow, lots of great tips coming in here on the ACE 250, I've found
that if you don't want to pick up nails, you can take them out using
the discriminate button. Just move over the item you want to delete
and hit the button.

Also, you know you have passed over an iron item, it when you swing
your coil one way and get a signal and when you bring it back the other
way you don't, it's usually iron.

For me if I'm hunting a site that has been really productive, I dig all
the signals.

As for the depth, I'm still using the coil that came with my machine and
my partner and I both dug coins in good top soil early this spring at over
12 inches. I must say we had to use our SunRay probes to get the target.
One of the coins was a barber dime and the other was a V nickel.

I was a non believer at first on the ACE 250, until my hunting partner showed
me the way. He had a signal and I could hear it through his headset. I was
using my Whites XLT and he called me over to check the signal. I didn't get
anything. He dug down and it was a barber dime. So the next time I was
out using my ACE 250 I tried the same thing on another friend of mine who
was using a Whites DFX. I got a signal reading 8 inches, and called him over
to check the area. He didn't get any signal. I dug down and found a
1941 Wheat penny at 7 inches. He is now a believer!
