SIO that fella, he's a nice large fire agate on matrix/host rock specimen, I wouldn't cut it out I'd polish the fire agate/chalcedony section and leave it a large awesome specimen. Cool find

I guess I will take it down to the car wash and clean it up better, then start to polish it. Don't have to worry about this one slipping out of your fingers.

These are a few more I found. I started to find a couple of good fire agates. I kept working back and forth up the hill looking for the source, when I found this big boulder. It was a nice spill of them that covered a couple hundred yards.

Just pressure wash it with your hose, then get SIO (Super Iron Out) "powder version" soak it over night, then stick it in fresh water for double the time you had it in SIO, brush it real good and wala it will look much better, might even show the fire better. Make sure you wear eye protection and do it outside also...

Here's a couple of pictures after I run it through the car wash. It did help to show some of the fire. Out of all my fire agates I don't think any other has that golden hue that this rock has in places. I think maybe just brushing and polishing it is about all I will do.

I agree with Steve. That way you have the beautiful sample with the agate in its natural matrix. Thanks for sharing. It is beautiful!

Try SIO sometime, maybe if you're hesitant do it on that big one,try one you can barely see a little Schiller effects and you will be surprised, most people hear iron out and they know iron oxide makes the fire so they are hesitant but the iron oxide is under thin microcrystalline layers so it won't damage the Schiller effects, with my fire agate I sometimes don't even see the fire until I clean it in SIO, but I agree if you plan on polishing it with a dremel attachment there's no need to clean it in SIO, I dug up about 15lbs of fire agate on my last outing so I just clean them and then I list them.

I will try SIO sometime when I get back home. Right now I am running around in Arizona with my 5th wheel detecting and rock hunting. When I get back to Michigan I will start to work on what I fave found.
