First 2011 hunt brings baby silver at 1820's house

Headed out to the 1820's house today for my first hunt of the new year. Overcast and muddy but warm, and no rain until late afternoon. Dug a variety of relics in the yard and out in the horse pastures. I guess my best find for the day had to be the sterling silver baby spoon. It was under a root of a huge oak next to the house. Came out in great shape and it looks to be fairly old.

Other finds were:
*Two 1800's flat buttons w/shanks (one Treble Gilt)
*Suspender clip
*A clip with a rabbit & bear on it. Looks 1800's?
*RFD padlock
*Pocket knife
*Asst'd & unknown

Thanks for looking,
MM

Thanks Scott. A barrel tap would be perfect the day after New Years Eve. :occasion14: :laughing9:
I'm assuming that "RFD" means "Relic Found Deep". :tongue3:

Re: First 2011 hunt brings baby silver at 1820's house

Nice recoveries MM. I recall someone on Tnet saying the RFD locks were used on mailboxes where the mail carrier and person using the mailbox both had a key. The RFD stood for "Rural Free delivery" like "Mayberry RFD". However, I just could have just watched too much football yesterday. WTG & HH, Quindy.

Re: First 2011 hunt brings baby silver at 1820's house

Those are some great finds Doug. Looks like you should be able to find a LC amongst those oldies.
It will happen soon, good luck.

"Durgin" hallmark? The one I found, the D looks the same as yours. It looks like the fancier the spoon, the fancier the D.

The stem looks the same, says 1910 pattern

Thanks for the info Tin. I was wondering what that "D" represented.
Must have been a rich baby. :tongue3: :laughing9:

HB,
I actually had a piece that I thought was an LC yesterday. It was heavy and the right size. Looked like copper too. It had been hit by a plow or mower and was bent at a 90 degree angle. I was all excited until I got it home & cleaned it up. I don't know what it was, but it wasn't a coin. :'(
I'll get one at this place sooner or later. The old stuff is still popping up so that's a good sign no one have beat me to it.
Thanks,
Doug

I agree Ant.
Those two are my favorites too. That animal clip just screams old. Hopefully I can track down another example on the internet.

Romeo,
I love these old properties when they haven't been hit yet. Always a great variety. Some of the plantation spots I hit are still turning up relics years later. It was a treat seeing that silver spoon in the hole under that tree root. Well worth the hassle.

Re: First 2011 hunt brings baby silver at 1820's house

Way to start your new year! Some nice finds, and I'd call that Sterling Silver spoon and VERY nice find.

BTW, RFD means different things in different parts of the US. Here locally, it is apt to mean Rural Fire Department.
