I'm new at this and have seen folks describe these as finds.....I made the assumption these were only typically found around battlefields. I didn't expect to find one in my cornfield here in southern Michigan, so I was surprised to dig it up.

.58" in diameter about .99" long and weighs 1.10 oz or thereabouts. Conical hollow base.

Way cool - Congrats on your first!:occasion14:

Nice. With a conical base I don't think it's a Sharps. Looks more like a standard union .58 and someone whittled the top of it! Best guess.

Cool find. I’ve only found newer ones

That's nice.... My 12 acre field is landlocked by the village, however it was (and still is) a farm. It's stubble now, pain to sweep the rows my arm is killing me...I hunted sunup to sundown yesterday and picked 4 modern pennies. I likely lost a few of them myself 25 years ago ha ha. This bullet popped on the first hole this morning. There hasn't been a rifle shot on my land in a long time. It was sold and divided up into smaller bits probably around 1890 or so. This would've likely been a civilian owned gun right? Probably a surplus item after the war? Unless, there was a Battle of Union City Michigan nobody knew about? Short skirmish...only one shot fired? Probably not. I'm happy I found something I'm windburned and feeling my age tonight.

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Its always exciting finding the first one. First one I found was on the 1777 Brandywine, PA battlefield. The minie hadn't been invented at that time. I think in both our cases veterans came home with some guns and were hunting deer.

Congrats on the bullet. Had to chuckle a bit when you mentioned finding the pennies you could have lost years ago. That's awesome. GL to ya out there.

Nice find!
Anything's possible. I've found a couple of fired ones in CT...probably military surplus for hunting after the CW.
