First 5.5 hours at new 1860's property
The pictures below represent the first 5.5 hours at a new house dating back to the 1860's. I've pulled close to 100 modern coins out of the yard so far, including the 11 wheaties in the picture. I think this is the first time I've gotten 11 wheaties from one yard without a silver coin to show. Perhaps I saved all the silver coin finds for last? I really have only hit a small portion of the yard so far. A 10X30' patch next to the gravel driveway produced most of the coins and wheaties, as well as that ring which I was convinced was gold until I got it home and noticed it was gold plated. I was a little disappointed as I have yet to find anything solid gold.
I found the silver handle and the horseshoe shaped decoration when it was dark out. The silver handle was that whitish color silver sometimes gets and when I was sorting through the junk and not junk I almost threw it on the junk pile. I really thought it was some scrap aluminum, the designs on it was what got me to put it in the clean and investigate more pile. I'm glad I did. It's marked Sterling on both sides, and one side has a hallmark. Does anyone have an idea what the hallmark is, and perhaps a date range? Also, any ideas on what this went to? I think it may be the handle to perhaps a mirror or something.
The horse shoe thing is also pretty interesting, it was gold plated at one time, and you can see where a pin was probably attached to it, there's a gray circle, and also a channel where a pointed pin probably went. I'm thinking perhaps it was a hair clasp? Anyone have any thoughts on it?
I can't wait to get back and grid the remainder of the yard. I have a feeling there are some older coins there somewhere.
Thanks for looking,
Jai
