Found this a few days ago at an old property with plenty of history. Couldn't post because of the photo issue. So here goes my attempt to see if this works. If anyone can tell me about this, please do. The property owner knows nothing of it and does not recognize it.

Nice cameo broach

beautiful cameo! Get some better, close up photos, back and front, and look for a makers mark on it. I'll PM Breezie and see if she can swing in to take a look at it, but she'll want better photos too!

I will have to try to get better photos. I had to scale this way down. The photo problem is fixed however, the resolution I usually take them in is now to big to upload so this is the only photo I was able to upload that was taken from my phone and not my usual camera. Land owner said finders keepers so woot woot!

Very nice find. clean carefully and try not to scratch it.

Nice find, Beeps. Hope it turns out to be old. Better get in all you can get....it's gonna get cold next week!:icon_thumright:

Thanks Doc for the heads-up. :) And, yes, you are right, I would like to see better pics, and especially one of the back.

Beeps,
You have a beautiful Victorian Cameo! What a really nice find. :icon_thumright: Cameos go back all the way to Renaissance times. From what I can tell from the pic, yours looks to be from 1880s to the Turn of the Century plus. Cameos are carved relief, which is a raised positive. Sometimes the carver would put there name on the back of the cameo or either the name of the lady who was receiving it. I have my great-grandmother's cameo, and her name is etched on the back. Be sure to look at the gold to see if it is marked. More than likely it will be marked (if marked) on the clasp. The type of clasp will help narrow down the date the brooch. I look forward to seeing more photos. I would suggest taking it to a certified jeweler and have it professionally cleaned.

Great find :)
Breezie

There she is! Thanks Breezie!

Congrats.Thats one awesome looking broach.HH.

Hiya Beeps. Any new info or pics of this nice find? Hope your ground is soft enough to get a hunt in. Mine isn't, lol.

I agree it is a great find. Ive been hunting for 20 yrs pretty hard and only have found three of them. And only one of them was 100 percent complete. Id say its from the late 1800's. Looks to be sterling also.

I will take pictures and post them tonight for you guys. Its odd how good of shape it is in and the pin is still in tact. I have not cleaned it for fear of damage, but it threw me off that it wasn't eaten away.

Great find beeps, I'm jealous the ground here is to hard. It's nice to see others getting out with great finds.

Ground is frozen here too. Many of shovels have fallen recently haha. After the first few inches of concrete it gets easier haha. I just can't let winter stop me or I will go nuts if I have to wait until spring ( which I won't) . My Co Workers make fun of me because I was out tuesday in the negative wind chills but once you start digging and finding, you forget the cold :)

One easy way to handle photos is take the best resolution you can (macro or flower icon on your camera) and get the file onto your computer. You can crop it and/or shrink down the image size using Windows Paint (or similar program) and resave it into .jpg format- pretty user friendly. Upload the new .jpg and wait for 'ooooohhh's' and 'aaaaahhh's'. Send me a PM if you need more details - I hope this helps!

Great fine, wonderful piece to at to your 2014 finds.

HH and thanks for sharing,

Matt

First of all great find and I hope your new photos show more so you can get the ID you need. Moving forward.....
FYI..."My Co Workers make fun of me because I was out Tuesday in the negative wind chills" ... News flash.... it's that squirrel humping your head (still) their laughing at. And this head activity helps keep you warm and your mind off the cold.
