Hello everybody! Found a web site that listed all the schools in my area including the date built and whether they were still in operation, closed or demolished. Went to one not far from the house today to hunt, and seen a couple of older abandoned houses with the condemned signs on the front door. Well me being the guy that I am went up on the porch to see if there was a listing for the owner of the house to see if I could detect there in the future. Well as I was walking up the steps to look at the sign, a policeman drives by, I looked at him and he kept going up the street. I looked at the sign and didn't see a owner listing. BUTTTTT the front window was missing from the house so I walked over and looked inside. There were still people's stuff and furniture in the living room. I turned around to walk off the porch and the policeman pulled up and yelled at me to "Stay Put"! He walked over to the bottom of the steps and told me to come here. I confronted the officer, and he asked me what I was doing and if that was my property. i said no and that I was just looking at the sign to find a owner. He asked me what was in my bag, told him it was my metal detector. He took my ID and called it in, by that time 2 more police show up, one in a paddy wagon. I'm thinking I'm going to jail for trespassing. Well 2 of the officer's go into the house, and the first policeman gives me back my id and says in the future it isn't wise to go on other people's property without permission. Seems there is alot of scrappers breaking into these houses and stealing copper and wiring from these houses. Well to make a long story short I was let go. I went to the old school that was built in 1915 and it was tore down, with the top layer of grass removed. I detected for about 4 hrs there. I found a 1925 Buffalo nickel between some tree roots, and a Catholic pendent that reads "Remember the Sabbath day to keep us holy" on the front, on the back there is a woman praying in relief. Also $2.00 in clad. Still alot of area to hunt there. Going back tomorrow. Sorry for the long post. HH

nice buffalo. too bad you got hassled by the cops, but at least they are doing their job. some just take it a little too far.

Thanks Jewleryguy. Yeah the cop was just doing his job. Still the houses are going to be torn down soon, I'll just wait till they are removed and go detect the yard. On the sign it's a condemned building and the city adds the payment for removal on the past owner's tax bill. So the city ends up owning the property which is then free game to hunt on. HH

I had something similar happen recently at a public park. Though it was dark, the park was still open - Posted 10pm. Apparently some numb nuts at a nearby motel saw my flashlight and thought it was odd and made a report. Cop took my ID and asked me where else I like to hunt at night so he doesn't accidentally release his k-9 on me. Kewl. I taste like crap. No big hassle. Small town, no problem. HH

We let ourselves be known to the Countryside Watch, Police, plus a few MP's when doing close to Military sites. Because they are mostly looking for Hare Coursers. They hold our car details & sometimes mobile no.s, it makes life easier & saves a lot of wasted effort on both sides.
