Went hunting this morning found three nickels, two buffs and one 1889 V nickel and then I found this button.I`m pretty sure its a missouri state seal coat button. It still has some of the gold gilt on it.Does anyone know the value of it.(its priceless to me but I`d like to know for bragging rights).Who would wear a button like this.It dosent seem to be a run of the mill infantry button any info would be appreciated.THANKS.jeff

Hey Jeff

what a nice find!

You definitely have bragging rights for such a button.

There are better experts here than i am so I will leave the details to them, but wanted to say congrats on a great find and the coins were great as well. Seems you found a nice little place to hunt and i bet there is more there to be found.

Cool find,

Based on backmark and from photos in American Military Buttons, Makers and Dealers; Their Backmarks Dates by William F. McGuinn and Bruce S. Bazelon, I believe it to be from 1870's to 1920's.

This book is generally used in conjuction with Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons by Alphaeus H. Albert.

The dates on the coins seem pretty indicative that they came from about the same period.

Cool button though. I like the bears.

I was really hoping you were pulling that button near Wilson's Creek or Carthage! Southwest Missouri has a lot to offer Civil War wise...

If you throw a town out that you live at, I can probably provide you with a skirmish or battle near there.

Great Button! I love it!

The backmark matches Plate B-6 2)C in Warren Tice's "Dating Buttons" book and it is listed as 1879-1890.

 That's one nice looking button you have there. WTG

Thank you all for your help and replies.I guess this button is from the Indian Wars era of our country history.Maybe it was worn by a civil war veteran LOL!!!I knew it was to good to be true.I found it in Neosho, they had a couple of skirmishes here and the rebels even burned down the courthouse in 1862.They also had two small battles about 15 min. from here in Newtonia Missouri.I have found about 3 doz. 3 ring minie balls and several assorted musketballs around the area, but I have yet to find anything that can be directly associated with the civil war.I will definitely keep looking. Thanks again .jeff

I've got a map of the Battle of Wilson's Creek from a book published during the middle of the war. The map shows the army campgrounds in areas not covered on the National Battlefield. I always wanted to try out those areas when I was going to college at SMS.

Neosho is a great spot to look. I would also check out Clinton. I believe that is also somewhere right around that area. The Union Army had one of their main campgrounds during the war (west of the Mississippi) located in Clinton. That should do for some good digging for you.

Also, if you head to Springfield anytime soon, the parks just west and south of the Missouri State campus, I don't remember the names of them, are good locations to dig.
Good luck
