I don't find a lot in my yard anymore... the cool finds are few and far between.

Today I hit the yard after getting tons of rain last week.

After narrowing in on some mixed signals I just dug. Out popped a button!!

There is an anchor on the front and writing on the back, which I almost completely destroyed.

I've seen this button discussed on this board and it seems there's no Definitive answers about dating a button like this.

Below are some of the date marks but apparently they also used these date marks on later buttons... so it seems this button is hard to ID when it comes to dating it.

It looks a lot like a Chief Petty Officers button. It is listed as NA 131B in Albert's button book. The rank of Chief Petty Officer was established on April 1st, 1893 for the U.S. Navy.

Here's a scan from Albert's book. Yours is the 3rd one from the left.

I don't find a lot in my yard anymore either but, some of my best digs came out of my yard. I also will hunt it after a soaking rain to see if I can squeak out another old coin or relic. Very nice button. Love me some old military buttons for sure. Great dig.
