First COB coin!

[Born2Dtect]

Went to my clubs first hunt of the year. I had not found a single thing and was headed back to the car when I decided to detect on the way out real slow and deliberate. I was reward with my only find of the day a "Cob Coin! Circa (1537 - 1733). Should be my oldest coin to date. I was looking to break the pre 1800 barrier and may break the pre 1700. All I know now is it is a shield type circa (1572- 1733). This was my only find of the whole day, but OH What a find it was. Enjoy the pictures. If you can help ID the coin please post it here. By the way it was found with an Explorer II at 10".

What a great find!! I think Don hit it right on the head! What you have found is a Spanish 2 Reales Cob (1621-1665). I rotated your picture so you can compare.

For more info go to http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/ColCoinText/Sp-Cobs.2.html.

I hope this helps!

Cool find ED.

Down at 10". Wow.

How big is that coin?

Mirage,

It is a little smaller than a dime. The signal was clear from all directions, but not loud like clad or tin. I will always remember that distinct sound. I hope I get to hear it again. Thanks to Don and Neil for the potential ID. You guys impress me with your knowledge.

Thanks,

Ed D.

aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

[West Jersey Detecting]

It is a little smaller than a dime.

Being that it is smaller than a dime it is either a 1/2 Reale (same dates), which is 16mm, or more likely a very worn 1746 1 Reale, which is 18mm. Check the first page of the link in my other post for more details & Photos.

VERY COOL , THE ONLY ONE , BUT THE COOLEST ONE . WTG

[Born2Dtect]

Until I find out otherwise, I,ll call it a severely worn & clipped 1 Real Phillip II (1621-1665) Spanish Cob Coin.

Thanks to all for the comments and help.
