Ok so being a total amateur and only had about 3 hours under my belt so far in hunting My first coin I found was an 1981 D cent.... second was a 1992 and the third was a 1946 wheat. I found some trash, bottle top piece of aluminium and an old milk jar lid. So I figured that was pretty good concidering I had no clue about it when I started. I am kinda getting a hang of whats going on but still not totaly sure, and I still cant decipher tones yet. I am not even going to worry about changing the settings.

One thing I was wondering is if anyone had any tips on pinpointing and what kind of numbers show up for diffrent coins in digital?

doesn't anyone have any input?

I notice when you are scanning it flips though multiple numbers fast. are these pieces of metal its picking up as the coil goes over the ground? Also I was testing the detector with a silver half dollar and I noticed it doesn't like to pick it up very well when you are 12 inches or so from the coil. Why is this? I would think it would get more of a signal though air then dirt.

Well first of all alot of Se users use the smart find screen.... So the digital numbers do not appear! But I started with the digitals so I can give you a little help....

Usually for me dimes were coming up 3/28...to 3/29...and 4/28...

cents 7/25 7/26 area

nickels 10/5 10/6 to 11/5

quarters usually 00/29

Hope that helps...

With the pinpointing it sounds like you are hunting in a trashy area with several signals being given at once because there are several different targets! Most likely good and bad...

With this you have a few options... Use your discrimination check bottlecaps...and what ever else you need to discriminate out...

Also a smaller coil to help with the masking problem to separate the signals...

For the pinpointing try this.... Use your pinpoint mode (vco) and when you have the loudest response ...drag the coil slowly toward you target centered...when the signal disappears the target should be right at top of coil...good luck... :)
