sorry, I just meant that it is a shame to scour old colonial sites to cull items for profit. I would rather see someone put together assemblages of artifacts which provide a context for the finds and lifeways of people at that place during that time.It is this common heritage and love of history that many of us here share.I just thought it a shame to pluck something and then rush down to the pawn shop to sell it for a pittance. the book values indicated a value of about 70 dollars in VG non dug condition, which I would imagine would equate to a value of something like five bucks in dug condition to a coin dealer.I would prefer someone who considers it priceless and recognizes its' value beyond monatary values to find it.
A gold ring from the beach or playground is simply not the same as anything from an American colonial site.
This is my opinion.........

Agreed, If I found a ring off the beach, I would feel guilty & hand it to the Police. Completely different from a Roman Brooch.

What he said.

Nice coin. So far I haven't found any coin valued at over $100. so the temptation to sell is low. I think if I knew I could get $200 or more for any coin I found I would sell it.

Awesome find! Tell him congrats! Nana ;)

I see what your saying Zeus. I agree with you as far as artifacts go.

Of course government agencies won't let you legally get near any site with a metal detector. You are a looter in their eyes. Of course if they lock it up and put it in a vault where nobody will ever see it again, what service are they doing? At least if these items are put on the market by a private person, it becomes available to a collector who cares about it. If we are talking about a currency hand made that is one thing, but a government issue to me is just currency and some is worth more than others. Truth be told I doubt I would sell the coin. Are you being honest though, when you say you wouldn't sell if you were destitute? If I needed to sell it to feed myself or family I would sell in a heartbeat.

Peace!

He gave up the hobby.

WHAT A RUSH FOR YOUR BUDDY TO GET HIS FIRST COLONIAL. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A PIC AFTER IT`S CLEANED UP.... SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A SWEET NEW SPOT, AND OLD TOO... DIG EVERYTHING...........PACO

Hey Green & Civilman
It must be us my buddy at work ask me to show him how to use his detector (Radio
Shack) Discriminator Etc. and you know what happened, beginners luck. 4 hours later he finds
a beautiful sword buckle. Me 1 Indian, 1 seated half dime& four colonial type buttons. I was pi**ed. But I regained my composure & congratulated him. Heh Heh yea right, I had a sleepless night, the very next day at the crack of dawn, (a kirkpa move but no one with me this time. I did the same but better, 1 sword buckle, 1 infantry, 1 ammo box plate, 3 confederate State of Virginia Buttons, then I felt a little better.
I would be hard pressed to sell any of my finds ever. Mortgage, food, car payment, etc.
maybe.
Good luck & hope to here you find a similar coin soon yourself in that same location.

It's OK Green, I know you will find your own before long. I'm one that keeps everything I find, a pack rat you might say. The only time I will sell something that I find is if I can get something that will find me something easier, or better.

Hmmmmm.....I'd definitely keep it to go with all the others I've found. I feel that a Colonial coin is equal to a Roman coin across the pond....very special. :)

It'll look just as nice in your collection even though you didn't dig it... ;D

I would keep it too but I can understand why someone would sell it. I usually put my coins in an album to look at. I don't necessarily collect for value...just for fun. Great coin. Looks like it may clean up nicely. Tell your friend congratulations.

i might as well set the record straight i am not selling the colonial coin because it is one of my best finds and it is a part of history ! :) green1 and i briefly talked about how much it was worth and he did say he would buy it but it is not for sale ! i keep everything i find to date but who knows if i need to feed my children or pay rent it might be a possability :)
