All Treasure Hunting
Got my Xmas pressie early, why wait for Santa to bring it, he may damage it on the way down the chimney.

I love my Cortes & know it inside-out but its not belt mountable & is slowly crippling me with the amount I do. So I wanted a detector which I could Belt mount & I choose a French make called XP Goldmaxx Power (UK version), it new (ish) on the market & it has great reviews.

I tested on the Winter Bean Field on land I have covered with the Cortes. I set it up as follows:
Iron Threshold - 7
Ses. - 12 O'clock
Ground - 12 O'clock
Iron Vol 10 O'clock
Silencer 'I'

(any XP users wish to comment on the above?)

I like to hear everything that's going on under my coil & decide myself whether to dig. I'm not one for pumping up the Disc so I dug many nails & coke bits & pieces.

After 1 hour or so, I found I had missed very little, so tried where the Archies had recently filled in the trenches.

Got hammered number 40 - Finally beat last years total ;D

4 Roman coins - one large one, no idea how I missed this one!
late 18th century Pewter Military button

The most interesting thing happened today, I got a button which has been personalised. The amazing thing is that Wisbech is over 1 hours drive & the name Mappen I can't find when researching. More amazing this is my second personalised ever & its the same as one I found early in the year. Not only was it not in the same field as the other one but it was over 1 mile away! (see second picture of one I found before)

Overall a good day, for a first try of the new machine.

Congratulations for beating last years totals for hammered. Now go learn that machine as well as the cortes.

Looks like ya did pretty good with the new machine! Nice finds..

well done on the hammered you needed! i feel better now ;D

is that a short cross one?

so, which things did you miss with the cortes, and did the goldmax help the pain?

All the finds are so fascinating I really enjoy your posts. The button mystery is neat.

The hammered is a halfpenny (long cross) of :icon_king: ? letters knocked off. This was in an area I hadn't done & only 1" deep.

I missed the Large Roman Coin & quite a few of the buttons & other pieces. Its not the best test, as I could have found any of these with the Cortes. I did miss them but they were no deeper than I find with the Cortes. I will need much more practice to understand the differences.

Dad & I will go head to head tomorrow for a battle of the detectors  Its new land & difficult rough conditions.

what about your back and arm? was it easier?

Oh, yes very much so. This for me is the most important difference.

Hello Crusader , ive got the old Gold Max so the controls are a bit different. I tend to have the sensitivity around 12 and the ground balance just where the red starts. A mate of mine though has the same as you an swears by having the sensitivity at max (says this nearly doubles the depth).

WTG Crusader. Looks like your off and running. HH and Merry Xmas. Good finds for 09 HH Ron

Nice finds! I can't believe you went with an XP, it is one of the best European detectors on the market! Three of my friends, people I have detected with use XPs and they get some good depth. An XP could be my next detector if I can get over the French part, I know they are good detectors. Have fun with your new toy and HH, Mike

By looking at your finds it looks like you have the settings down pretty good, very nice finds ::)

Congrats with your new detector Crusader. Most of my detecting friends only use the XP. I'm one of the last who's still stuck with the 100kg Minelab Explorer SE, ( my detecting arm is just like Conans )

I'm not sure what setup they use, but the old fields have produced some impressive finds after they bought their XP Goldmaxx Power

(In 2 different locations they have found Dirhem coinspills)

I'm going to change to the XP Goldmaxx detector as well, but first need to pay my Excalibur II.

Yes but this can be a two edge sword making it unstable to use

Thanks guys. I think I will try half way between 12 & max

glad you got your christmas present early! Nice job on getting the buttons!

I have been waiting for this......weldone on finding a hammered with the new machine, but you probably would have found it with any detector, you will not benefit from the XP until you are on an Iron (apart from the weight difference) infested sight then the the XP comes into it's own, I'm not convinced about all these depth theories that by doing this or doing that you will get more depth.Depth for me depends on whats under the coil IE size of target conductivity etc unless you hunt on grass(which I know you do) depth doesn't come in to it, sorry to babble on weldone on your first hunt

Might be a mistake I don't know anyone who uses that much :-\

Thanks, I did know this & its mainly the weight issue which I'm trying to solve. Most of my sites are not that iron infested. I hate learning a new machine, when I know my Cortes so well, but I need to think of my health. Hopefully it will inprove my hammered rate :icon_scratch: I was always pretty good at getting Qrters etc.,, I just hoped this may get hammered slightly deeper when I understand it. Main thing is I'm pretty pleased & my only complaint is the speaker is not that loud. I still managed without headphones today, but on a windy day I may need them (oh, I was wrong, they came with normal not wireless type)

Merry christmas to you!
Looks like you are in for a good time if you pulled
all of that without knowing the machine well!!!
Congratulations.
By the way. I you say that the tomorrow will be
"difficult rough conditions", I would Love to see
photos of the site! Good luck!
