It depends on what you mean by "detectors" and "readily available".
By "detectors", are you including primitive 2-box units? By "readily available" are you including mail-order days (before there were any brick-&-mortar stores selling them per se) where you saw a classified ad in the back of a "True West" type magazine
And does "readily available" include WWII mine-detectors that showed up after the war, but unless you were in the vicinity of a military surplus store, I guess you still wouldn't call that "readily available"? So you need to hone down your terms and definitions.

If your looking to buy a detector, then there are always detectors around to be sold. If your looking for the history of how long they have been on the public market, then I suggest google metal detector history.just-dig said:

In 1881, Alexander Graham Bell invented the first metal detector. As President James Garfield lay dying of an assassin's bullet, Alexander Graham Bell hurriedly invented a crude metal detector in an unsuccessful attempt to locate the fatal slug. Bell's metal detector was an electromagnetic device he called the induction balance!
In 1925, Gerhard Fischar invented a portable metal detector. Fischar's model was first sold commercially in 1931 and Gerhard Fischar was behind the first large-scale production of metal detectors!
During the '60s and '70s, interest in the use of these devices grew, causing the detector "analyzer" to be developed. By the early '80s, accuracy was improved considerably, along with the ability to identify the types of metals located by the transmitting field. The reduction in their size made them even more "user friendly."
