Hello all! I went metal detecting for the first time today and discovered a small metal box! After some help from lemon juice I was able to get it open! Inside was a neckless pendant made of copper, brass, or gold! I'm not sure what metal it is but I'm more interested in its age and history! I also found some bottles from the 1800s within inches of its location! I'm looking for any input or info on my first find! Thanks everyone

welcome to tnet and congrats on your find.knowing the composition of the metal can be important in its proper id.I would suggest stopping by a jewelry or pawn shop and have the item tested.

I will say this tho.......NICE START..:icon_thumright:

I know every time I find something that appears to be a box or capable of holding coins or other goodies, my mind races with imagination. So far, I have only been disappointed. I am very happy you weren't! Nice find and good luck in ID'ing it.

If the pendant is made of gold it wouldn't have any corrosion, it's hard to tell from your pictures but the pendant looks to have some corrosion??

As far as using nail clippers for size comparison, it's a first for me to see this as well, but I must ask to clarify the size, are they fingernail clippers or toenail clippers??:dontknow:

I would humbley say that an id on metal is absolutely required before further research is warranted.

I've taken Bayer aspirin many times out of a tin that looks like yours, so I agree with Mayor.

Congratulations on your 1st finds and WELCOME to the forum.

Thanks for the aspirin picture! It looks a lot like the one the pendant was in! Is that tin about 3/8 of an inch deep?

I don't have a tin to measure, but yes, 3/8 inch sounds right because these aspirin tins (Excedrin, Anacin, Bayer) were just tall enough to house the tablets. Generally there were 12 tablets per tin lying flat, side by side 4 x 3.
