First flying eagle..pennies through the years

In hunting a new permission where people have gathered over time I thought I found my first IHP fatty as it felt a bit thicker than a traditional penny. I was confused, then thrilled when an eagle emerged with toothbrush cleaning! The coin wasn’t in great condition but the 1857 date was clear! It was interesting to learn that 1856 was the test year of a smaller penny and not many (2000?) minted. Then it was only minted in 1857 and 1858. The fatty IHP would have been 1859-1864...so that is still on my bucket list!
I was also lucky enough to find a liberty head..1849

...and a button or something...!

...and more penny specimens...wheatie, copper 1982, “zincoln”

and a variety of items...


Thanks for sharing in the fun...I recently saw Kmatch7’s flyer and hadn’t really known about this coin...was jealous....and then the relic spirits gifted me with one! What will be next, I wonder! [emoji4]

I have been coinshooting 42 years and found hundreds of indians and just found my first flyer. no date but a flying eagle just the same . I have seen many found just never me, now where's that silver thimble hiding....

Congrats on your first Flying Eagle ! I have only found one in 30 years of detecting, and I found it 5 years ago. They are a tough coin to find because of their short run. I like your other coppers also. You had a great outing.

Still loving your quote. Great find and with 17,450,000 of these minted one would think more would be found. I got my one and only 1858 in Baltimore years ago near the Fort Point battlefield. I don't however see that bag if pull tabs here. (:. Also nice what the large cent often called Bun duns. Some times they used them in old houses when they cut the 2by 4 or 6 to short as a shim or when building for a good luck on a new home in the door frame. . Keep swinging girl. Well relic/coin hunting that is. Gary

Congratulations on your find as well, Gary....and I appreciate the reiteration of kind words. “Bun duns” is a new term for me! Interesting that they were used as shims. I thought they may have been put there for luck as you mentioned or for dating a project vs. such a practical use. I hope I don’t find one there because I couldn’t remove it from a lived in home. Pull tabs....well, not a lot here but there are 4 kinds...So far the display will be interesting showing a range of pennies, nails, and drink parts. I haven’t dated the pocket knife yet and have to derust the top piece to see if it was a spike or a tool. Love this hobby!
