Returned to Castle Field area again today and had the best days detecting this year, the first hammered of 2008 came as a very nice Henry111 1216-72 in nice condition. The next find was even more pleasing for me being a first, a Saxon Buckle bit difficult to date but the Saxons ruled between 400ad-1066. moved the time scale with my next find part of a Georgion seal ring with blue stone broken at the bottom :'( Not to be out done my detecting buddy came up with a very nice Edward111 groat 1327-77 just slightly clipped to the top edge. Later on as the light started to fail us I had the best find of the day a Roman Silver Denarius of Septimus Severus rev Minerva standing left with spear & round shield 194-195AD a very good day ;D

Oops. You know us guys from across the pond. We don't know crap about the things over there. Can't tell a shilling from a farthing, etc. Can't figure out why your pennies were so big? All that kind of stuff. Thanks for the clarification.

Just got back from the Pub:

Full details of the Denarius (from Dad whilst I was pub quizing):

This is a Septimius Severus AD 193-211. The legend Obverse is LSEP SEV PERT AVG IMP VII and Reverse PM TRP III COS II PP. The 1st Jan 195 was the award of his Tribunician Power III and AD 195 the year he gained his Imperial Acclamations IMP V, IMP VI and IMP VII. He was awarded his 2nd Consulship in AD 194 and his third was not given until AD202. His PM (Pontifex Maximus) and PP (Pater Patriae) titles were awarded in AD 194. This all dates the coin as being minted in Rome in AD195 precisely. The reverse figure is of the war like Goddess Minerva holding a transverse spear, shield at left shoulder and wearing a helmet. The poise is symbolic of the Palladium ( a statue stolen from Troy known as the Pallas-Athena) which was held in great reverence by the Romans who regarded it as the guardian of their city. It is a denarius Sears Vol II number 6326 RIC 49 RSC 381 VF £23 and EF £75.

VERY NICE WEEKEND - not often you get a hammered & roman silver in the same day.

We are still looking for our first this year.
Thanks Crusader.....do you usually find that once one Roman Silver has come of a field there are usually more, can't remember any time were a Roman Silver has come of a field that more haven't followed :o

Normally true. The sheep field I just did had 3 come off it (none this year :'(). Although I had a site with hundreds of roman bronzes & only one roman silver.
In my opinion - definately more, maybe another two years til you get one or next week, who knows.
