First hunt ever

I'm new to the hobby. My Equinox 800 was delivered this week and I spent a day familiarizing myself with the operations. Watched a video from Sod Busters Metal Detecting to get the basics down. Saturday was a beautiful day here in Ohio and the frost was out of the ground so I set out (in my front yard). My first find was the bolt, then the old style pull tab. The large piece of T post was the last. No treasure but familiarizing myself with tones and signals. Went up the road to an old RC Airplane flying field and tried up there. Able to distinguish a lot of trash and not dig, and found a few coins. The oldest was a 1967 dime. Overall I was not disappointed! Looking forward to the next hunt. Starting to put a list together of local areas I want to hunt.

Welcome aboard! There are lots of great vids out there on Youtube that will show you many of the tips, tricks and techniques you can use to turn that machine into a coin magnet. I watched them over and over, practiced like crazy and my Nox and I are now ONE! Good luck going forward!

Cover your holes properly... any junk found take with you throw out later... do not use a shovel in a spot you should be using a Lesche digger...
Get yourself a handheld pin pointer, a finds pouch, dress properly for Ohio weather (gloves...boots or good shoes)but be able to function... Watch you tube videos (more)... air test with your own coins/jewelry... learn your tid (target Ids)...

Ask questions... I am also new to the Equinox but have been detecting since 1980... good luck do not become frustrated... you will get it...

Good advice on all. I have already gotten a Garrett Carrot pin pointer. And using a mesh shell casing bag from clay shooting for my finds bag. Easy digging right now with moist spring soil.

You learn as you go, takes time, but when you're hooked, well...your hooked for life. You can learn ALOT on the Treasure Net forum from guys who know their stuff, and much of it by trial and error, so that perhaps you might avoid some but not all I guess of the "error" part. Go onto the "Forum" part of T-Net, till you find Brands, for different makes of Detectors, and you can click onto the Minelab brand, then right into the "Equinox" topic. Lots of stuff there.

Congrats on your first finds !

Reading your manual and watching video's is a big help but NOTHING beats time in the field with your machine.
Believe me when I tell you - these machines are smarted than we are.
The more time you spend with your detector - the more you'll understand what it's telling you.
That's when the good finds really start popping out of the ground !

Be sure to make a list of all you family's - friends and co-workers.
If their houses are around 1950 or older - hunt them !
