I don't get to hunt alot, but I try to make sure I am on the oldest sites everytime I go. This field site has been good to me and I knew if I lurked there enough, I might get lucky. After a couple hours of nothing significant, I finally got an iffy signal that was worth checking out. Once the initial dirt was removed the signal hit a little better and then I spotted her. Can't explain my excitement and was pleased with the condition even though it has a couple small scratches. Lucky the plows didn't tear her up after all of these years. It is going to be tough for me to beat this coin in Michigan. I have found older coins but these old silver coins are few and far between. Thanks for looking. I may try to get some better photos in the daylight tomorrow.

That's an amazing silver you dug, any chance to see a group shot of some other finds from the field? I had no idea Michigan gave up such nice oldies :o
I usually do show the other finds but the only other noteable finds were a couple lead balls (bullets), part of a harmonica reed, and some miscellaneous brass pieces. There are not a lot of targets left in this field but I keep picking at it.

Thanks to all for your comments.

Even a group of digs from past hunts would be cool, if you have one.. if not, no biggie

Here is some of the finds from this spot. It has been a good site and I plan on putting all of this in a shadow box eventually. I would love to find a few more spots like this.

no marked military buttons? :icon_scratch: that pile's very impressive to say the least

seems like your site was occupied for quite sometime given the little amount of wear on the halfdime and the fact there's IH's in there.. thanks for sharing

Beautiful capped bust silver ! High on my want list ! Nice find ! MaineRelic

Actually the 1864 IHP is the newest coin I have found there. First settlers started showing up in this area in the early 1830's so according to the coins, this place might have been gone by the mid-1860s. It is not shown in the 1872 plat book. These are the kinds of places I look for but rarely do they give up this many goodies.

maybe a small homesite that burned and they moved to a different location.. they were certainly gone by the mid-1860's given the provenance of your finds. It's hard to find a site strictly Pre-CW ANYWHERE. congrats..

Twinkling silver...makes my heart go pitter patter. Congrats

Congrats on a great coin Wallhangers :hello2: I still can't believe that you found that. Weird how we were both able to scratch goal coins off of our lists on consecutive days. Definitely a banner find in my opinion. Let's get out when you get a chance.

Very nice coin, I want one!!

Yep, we both nailed a good one to take off our list. Give me a shout and we'll get out soon, weather is starting to get nice here this week.

That is one beautiful coin!

Rob found his first seated dime and it was an 1876 Carson City. He told me the day before that he didn't understand why he hadn't found one yet since he was finding LC's and IHP's in that time frame. I told him it was a matter of time and that time ended up being the next day. It was funny because I then told him that same day how I wanted a capped bust and I pulled that off a couple days later. I guess maybe we better keep calling out the ones on our wish list and maybe it will keep happening.

There are so many stories out there like that! I have a few of my own too ;D but seriously, the metal detecting Gods do exist. :laughing9:

Your right about the stories umrgolf, here's an interesting one. In the last 3 years on my first outing each year, I have nailed a good coin. Granted, I usually put myself on a good site for the first one, but 2 years ago I started off with a really nice 2-center, last year I found a really worn King George 111 1/2 Penny (circa 1770-1775), and this year the capped bust. The King George was barely recognizable and had two holes in the middle suggesting that after the coin wore out, they converted it into a button. Still on my wish list...seated quarter, flying eagle, gold coin and of course the ever-elusive 20 cent piece. Bring on them coin Gods!
