So I got off work and stopped by a farmer friend's place to get some tomatoes. He has THE BEST around and he charges about half of what everyone else if getting. He also throws in a few extras which is cool.

Better yet, he also knows I treasure hunt and gave me permission to hunt a HUGE hay field. I didn't even ask he just brought it up. It's at least 15 acres and it's never been built on; only farmed. The grass was pretty short considering.

It's pretty clean so far. I walked around for almost a half hour and didn't get a single hit.
Then, I got a nice high, deep hit. I figured it was probably trash but of course, I dug it anyway 'cause you never really know until you know.

I got down about 8 inches and saw the end of one half sticking out. The rest was deeper. I pulled it out, re checked the hole and it was still ringing. Beneath the first half awaited the other half. That was at least a foot down.

First Old Horseshoe Sept 18 2014 001.webp

This is my first actual real horseshoe. It still has pieces of nails in it.
I dug up one a while back but that one was a pitchin' shoe so I'm not counting it.

I was running my disc at about 11:00 and had this one not been so highly oxidized I'm sure I would have passed right over it.

I have no clue how old it is but I would guess that it came off of a work horse a very long time ago. This isn't a location where anyone would just ride. I can just picture a horse pulling a plow or some other piece of old time farm equipment.

So, does anyone know how long a horseshoe needs to be in the ground to rust into two pieces??

Other than a bit of trash, that's pretty much it for today. I ran out of daylight again.
These days are just getting too short.

Thanks for looking and HH.

Just be glad your not up here in Maine. I've had a frost for the last few nights[emoji45]

sent from a potato...

I am glad. I absolutely HATE cold weather.
I dread winter even more now 'cause I won't be able to treasure hunt.

I forgot to call it Silverqueen Sweet Corn, I left the sweet part out, we call that bland yellow corn, horse corn, lol. On the Eastern Shore of Maryland we have miles of corn being grown, unfortunatley they say the run off from the farmers fields is the reason the Chesapeake Bay is polluted. We have tons of deer here also, herds of over 100 can be seen driving south down route 213, in the fall after the fields are cut down, we have a few white deer running around also. I have never hunted, but if I did, I would be outside a woods edge before sunset, the deer come out of the woods to eat the green grass that does not grow in the forest areas. And yes grocery store tomatoes are called hot house tomates, not the same as grown outdoors, they dont even look red, they look orange.

You know, they've been milking the Bay and it's pollution forever. That's why the idiots who run MD imposed the idiotic rain tax; the only one in the entire world. They're "saving the Bay" yet again and they really mean it this time.

I have friends who own a sawmill and had to pay 47,000 dollars last year in rain tax alone.

I don't buy the idea that they bay is dying. In fact, it's WAY cleaner now then when I was a kid as is every river in the state.
They just use that excuse to get more money to waste on their idiotic schemes and to fund their lifestyles.

I work with a guy whose brother just lost an election and left the MD General assembly. He gets a lifetime pension that kicks in after serving two terms. Not bad for a few short years huh??
The really funny thing is the fact that he originally ran on a platform of term limits yet served three terms. Had they not gerrymandered the districts this time around he probably would have won again. No one knew him in the new area.

They're all a bunch of crooks and con artists who depend on stupid and uninformed people to win elections. It works too.
They also don't really care about "saving" the Bay. In fact, if they ever really did, they couldn't use it to extract more money from everybody.

They've been saving it for the last 50 years and they still haven't saved it??

Also, the DNR "police" are so lazy they only go into the parks as far as they can drive. I know beautiful places that have been SO trashed it's a crime. I've reported it to the DNR and frankly, they don't give a damn. They won't dare get out of their truck walk a 1/8 mile and write a ticket to the people who are actually trashing the river or make them haul their trash out of the woods. It's ridiculous. We're wasting our money paying these people. We'll probably be paying them for life soon enough too for not doing their jobs.

The only way the parks get cleaned up is when people like myself and others do it. Then, you risk getting cited for open containers in your vehicle should you get hassled by some cop. They won't listen when you try to explain what you're doing; especially in Howard County. Those cops are like robots who just follow their training and ignore what you have to say.

It's really gotten bad around here.

What is rain tax? I have a few guesses...

A rain tax is what our "Governor", Martin O'Malley and the Democrats who own this state come up with when they need more money to throw down some black hole and can't borrow any more.

Yes, here in MD they use satellite imagery (probably Google earth) to calculate the square footage of your roof and charge you a "rain" tax for the water that falls from the sky and runs off, as if your roof is the cause of the rain in the first place.

They claim they have to once again "save the Bay" and because of this, they have to tax "your" rain. Snow will be next and then sunshine. Just wait and see. These people are shameless in their greedy money grabbing schemes.

Einstein said that the only difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has it's limitations. The idiots who implement these schemes and those who support them prove this to be true. There are people who believe that this is a great and wonderful idea and willingly fork over their money to pay for it.

Watch out too because O'Malley wants to be president and he wants it BADLY. If that ever happens God help us. I can go to any used car lot and meet 10 guys just like him.

Thanks for explaining that. It sounds to me like we agree completely politically. If Maine hears about this we will be next to have a rain tax. As liberal and over the top maine is we will get as you say a snow tax as well. Maine always mimics other states on rules and regulations including tax, and then goes stricter.

I make my living as a farrier, and in reality the shoe that you found is a mule shoe.
There are NO ox shoes pictured in this thread so far. All are mule or horse shoes that are broken.

Thanks for the ID. I appreciate it.
I noticed the shape is a bit different than the horseshoes I've seen.

My uncle used to tell me lots of stories when I was a kid and one was about how they used mule teams to do so many things back in the day. They even carved a road straight up a massive, steep hill in my area using mules teams pulling graders. He said it took weeks but they got it done.
The road is still in use and I drive it every day.

Yeah, they could make a killing on a snow tax up north where you live.
I hope none of them are reading this thread. I wouldn't wanna' give them any brilliant ideas.

The guy I mentioned who recently lost the election is actually a Republican. In the MD general assembly, republicans are outnumbered about 4 to 1. The Dems have all of the power here.

This is also a sanctuary state. O'Malley has laid out the welcome mat for illegal aliens and has made it clear that not only will they face no consequences, they'll also receive money and other public assistance, in state tuition for college and anything else they need. He openly and publicly calls them "new Americans".

They're actually paying people between 3 and 6 thousand a month to house the unaccompanied immigrant children that are overwhelming the border as we speak. They're quietly bussing them in by the thousands. Last I heard, another 1500 have come here. That was a few weeks ago.

I genuinely feel bad for those small kids who are truly escaping violence but these "children" go up to the age of 17 and that's a serious problem. Many are violent thugs and criminals.

I personally encountered 3 MS13 gang members in one of our state parks back in July. They were tattooed from head to toe and had VERY bad attitudes. The "leader" had a HUGE MS13 tattooed across his back. That's genuine. You cannot wear that tattoo and expect to live if you're not a member. These are some of the ones who are actually CAUSING the violence they're supposedly escaping.
Many of them must commit a murder to join. This is one of the "unintended consequences" of idiotic policy. You don't want to mess with these people. I promise you that.

In my encounter, one of them stopped, turned around and gave me a really dirty look. I stood my ground and didn't say a word. I looked him dead in the eye. Thankfully, he said something in Spanish and then walked away. His partners followed. The only weapon I had on me was a switch blade knife with a 4 inch blade and I'm very thankful I didn't have to use it. I don't need that kind of crap in my life. Besides, all three of them would have jumped me had anything started and probably would have savagely beaten and possibly killed me.

This was in one of our state parks where kids and families go for a nice time. Unfortunately, it's being overrun with illegals. I've spoken with many of them. They come from Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, you name it. They're flocking here in droves. Most are cool and just want a peaceful life but some are anything but. My biggest complaint is the trash. They carry tons of stuff into the woods but NEVER carry anything out. Maybe it's a cultural thing and they're just clueless or something.

You would think that they would at least notice that the overwhelming majority Americans tend to carry their trash out with them most of the time. There are signs everywhere that say "pack it in, pack it out". It couldn't be any more obvious. What's going on is terrible but no one's willing to do anything about it.

The state has hired a few young "rangers" and they send them out with a handful grocery store bags to pick up trash. They need a fleet of dump trucks. It's a joke. I've become friendly with one young lady ranger. She's a 23 year old part time student and she's told me that they pay her to basically ride around, fill maybe 5 or six small bags with trash and that's it. It's just another pointless waste of money.

I was always taught that if you do something, do it right or don't do it at all.

The politicians will never have to deal with these thugs and this massive amount of trash like the rest of us. It's only a matter of time before some tragedy will be a direct result of this open door policy if it hasn't happened already.

I love kids and if I were in a terrible country I would probably escape myself but encouraging it is a very bad and extremely short sighted idea. These people never think anything through to the ultimate consequence.

I almost moved to Tennessee back in the early 90's. In some ways I regret not doing it because it's gotten much worse here. This is an incredibly beautiful state but we have bona fide idiots running it. Voting is almost pointless at this point. The people I vote for always lose. Even if they do win most get corrupted in no time anyway.

Hey thanks buddy if your including my pics also (I'm assuming you did). So help me out here please.... Does the horse / mule put most stress on the front center of the shoe when walking? I'm assuming so because the ones I find are broken in the center. This would explain why I find so many halves... right? They break and one half gets pulled off when it hits something pulling it off. And then later the other half...? This wagon road must have REALLY had some traffic on it at one time. I've found many of these in very short distances from each other. And I've hardly even began to hurt it yet.

The greatest point of wear is usually at the point of their toe where they "break over".

Here's a shoe that I pulled off yesterday.
Notice that not only has it worn thinner, but it's worn narrower as well.
It would not have been long before it looked just like the ones in your post.
seriously worn shoe.webp

Thanks for attempting to get the thread back on subject. Horse and mule shoes wear out, and get worn in two. A horses hoof grows about 3/8 inch a month, and the US Army used to shoe their horses and mules every 6 weeks. If the shoes aren't worn out, they were reset, the shoe pulled, the hoof trimmed and the same shoe nailed back on. I packed mules into the Desolation Wilderness out of Lake Tahoe, Calif. That country is solid granite, and we would wear horse shoes in two in a month.

For an application like that, I would tend to want to apply borium for added traction as well as the wear factor.

it was down deep.
As far as the illegal children I whole heatedly agree with you, and I hope your state turns around.

Yeah, that would have been a good idea, but there was no torch or arc welder, and as far as that goes, no forge. Cold shoes, strictly cowboy shoeing all the way. The season only lasts about three months, but it seemed like someone was always shoeing a horse.

If you ever find yourself in a position like that again, with just a forge or even a hot fire you can apply a product called "drilltec". It's chunks of tungsten suspended in silver solder, and comes in stick form. You just break off appropriate length pieces, place it on the toe and/or heels of the shoe (as desired) and heat the whole mess until it flows, then let air cool (so you don't risk thermally shocking it off). You just need to be careful that it doesn't "flow" into your nail holes.
