First the Excavator, then the Arkies… lastly the dozer!

This is what I found today after a heavy excavator, 18 archeologists and finally a John Deere 450J bulldozer dug, screened and graded this site for almost 3 months! I’ve been detecting this site for the past 3 years prior to the land being sold for residential development last fall. After the Arkies started to excavate this summer, I actually stopped by and spoke to the supervisor to see what they’ve been finding at the site.

Well last week I noticed the Arkies were gone and a bulldozer had started grading the site making it ready to hopefully be planted again for one last season. Right away I found a 1901 Vickie LC, which was followed by a King George V silver dime. I then found a 1918 LC, a crotal bell and at the time what I thought was going to be a silver thimble… wrong, aluminum.

What I at first thought was a bent piece of scrap brass turned out to have writing on it. It reads, ’MARINE BAND, USA PATENT AUG. 24, 1887. At one end of the tag it says, “MADE IN GERMANY”. Unfortunately, I could find nothing similar in the patent records on either the date of the name ‘Marine Band’.

Congratulations on the excellent finds Antiquarian. They sure are filling those spaces in quick since the highway went it.

As you know, highway 407 has created major changes in the topography here in the east GTA.
This site is about 5kms from the 407, but all available land now seems to be slated for development.

So much history to save and so little time.
