Hello All,
My wife and I researched an area near us that had an old mill and some homes dating back to 1645. The mill operated for 200+ years and was destroyed in 1935.

Today we went for our first hunt. We used all the reference points we created and found numerous underground pipes and structural steel. We also found a half of a spade shovel with interesting steel composition (layered and flaking off).

We also found 15 tokens from a 1969 Sunoco and Shell promotion dating back to 1969.

We used a minelab 305 set to All Metal and a Garrett Pinpointer. Although the battery on the Pinpointer went dead we still found the tokes 3-4 inches in the ground.

It got late so we marked the spot and return to the same area we found the tokens tomorrow.

While it is not the find if the century we were both happy with our first hunt. [

Any suggestions and guidance woul be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Take your time. Dig everything! Don't get discouraged if you find lots of trash because sometimes one has to wade through the trash to get to the treasure! Have fun and good luck! I would hit the area where you found the tokens hard, their could be coins there and anything other than pennies and nickels prior to 1965 should be silver!

Personally im not crazy about all metal mode especially in an area where there is a lot of trash or pipes etc. I like to have it set in discrimination mode so I can pick which targets I want to dig.
With a site like you have that has apparent history you can afford to cherry pick at first and over time as the targets get thinner and harder to find then switch to all metal.
Tokens are cool to find of course, I like finding them myself but use discrimination mode to pick your targets. That minelab uses a concentric coil so imagine that search pattern coming from that coil looking like an ice cream cone and the further down you go the smaller the point is so the smaller the area your machine sees. My point on that statement is go slow with your swings and make sure when you swing you cover your last swing by 50%. If you had a double D coil would be a little easier on covering the area.
Just go slow, dig all your targets till you master that machine. It sounds like you are in a great area and its nice to see a husband and wife spending time together having fun. Also make sure to take extra batteries with you lol.

Thanks s.c. and bz

I agree with bzbadger, add a bit of discrimination. Enough to eliminate iron anyway. X2 on the extra batteries. This is really your first hunt with a new pin pointer and new batteries and they went dead? Wow, either that pin pointer is a battery eater or the batteries were sub standard. Try turning off the pin pointer when not in use. If it still keeps eating them, I'd be sending that puppy back.

Thanks cuda.

fun report. Good play by play. Looks like you're facing some serious spring growth there. I tend to hunt those "cow pasture" type location strictly in fall or winter, when the grasses are all low and dead. Easier to swing.

The area is 50/50 Sand and Dirt. Went back today and it started raining. Found 2 dimes (unknown year yet) 4-5" in the ground. Also an unidentifiable coin shaped item (dime sized) Encrusted in dirt. And a spoon 5" down with some Markings. The Minelab/Garrett combination seems to be working well.

Thanks Tom
