Today I took my new E-trac out for the first time. I really hope I learn to master this thing because as of now, I am finding more Square Nails than ever before, in the coin setting! They sounded sweet every time, but never morphed into the coin I thought I was digging. Along with a few dozen nails and some foil, I also found this military button and what I thought was a necklace. After tumbling, it almost appears to be a fan pull chain though? The odd thing is that it is over 7ft long, thicker than a pull chain and was found outside of an 1800's church. No activity in the area for the last 50yrs or so, other than me ;D
Anyway, any info on either item would be greatly appreciated, as would some hints as to how to set this dang etrac :tongue3:

Great looking eagle button! :notworthy:
The chain looks like it might have part of a hanging electric lamp. :icon_scratch:

HH,

Congrats ! That button is a great Dig :icon_thumleft:
:read2:

I use an etrac and all I can offer is this. I started out in 4 tone since I had never used a multitone machine before and the basic setup from the factory. In the first few minutes I found a beautiful 1924 d SLQ. In the next week I found more silver than I had found all year with 2 other machines. Dig the high tones if you are in 4 tone especially if they are repeatable in both directions. Square nails will sound pretty but the silver and copper will ring through if you put the coil over it. If you are using multi tone then make sure it sounds good both ways at first and then after you feel comfortable start hitting the iffys a little more. Good luck and happy hunting. TMAN...

The button is a 1902-present pattern. I don't know the history of your site, so dating it is beyond my capabilities. About 20 years ago when I was Operations Sergeant in a unit in Georgia, we were phasing out Korean War and Vietnam era command post equipment that used this chain type. It was used in those shelters as flap weights, but is a common type ball chain, sold in rolls to manufacturing companies. I have seen them as pulls on vertical type blinds and curtain slides.

Keep Swinging...

I can give you the best tip on the Etrac around.........CALL MIKE aka 4H, it will still take you a little while to get used to it, but you have what many consider the best all around machine on the market.

Tnrelicman has a good "wide open" setting too. I'll bet he will share it with you

I"ll take any advice/setting suggestions anyone will give me at this point, it would be greatly appreciated!

Mike, I will be calling you in the near future. Thank you, it was a pleasure doing business with you once again :icon_thumright:
You aim to please and always do.

Thank you.

If you call me, I will run through the settings, and program with you. Just so you are comfortable.

Congrats on the finds! I got my E-Trac two months ago and learning something new about it every day. It's a fantastic machine!

I have a spot I've hunted where the nails ring like silver on both my Minelab and my Whites. :icon_scratch: :dontknow: I always thought it was nails and/or the soil conditions. I have not (yet) dug any silver coins from the site.

Your chain is probably a "draw chain" out of a curtain rod.

There is nothing wrong with the detector.

If you notice a lot of those old square nails are not totally disintegrated, that's because they are not just pure iron / steel. The exact alloy I don't know, but I know who does know.

you'll have this machine down in no time.. i seen what you did with your other machine. it's in your blood...can't wait until we all can get out again...good job tex

Nice eagle button.

Im a Coin shooter, especially silver coins, so hunt I in Quick Mask, with the Ferrous at 18 and the Conduct at 30. The places i hunt are so littered with pulltabs, and foil they overwhelm you with sounds. So i have masked them out so all i hear are indians and above. (I know i miss nickels but i could care less, id have to dig 500 pull tabs to get a V nickel, and then look at it for two hours to find the date.) After ive hunted a spot to death i then turn on the standard Coins program and look for those stinking nickels. The E-trac is so good at discriminating that even if a coin is touching a rusty nail it will pick the coin up. I have found pennies inside rusted screw caps. I use multi tones with conductive audio. Im not real fond of two tone ferrous. Ive had better luck using Quick Mask versus the 2 tone ferrous. I set my VARIABILITY at 28 and my LIMITS at 30. With these settings silver dimes scream at you. If i set variabilty at 27 a penny and dime sound too similar. Really worn silver dimes will come up as a penny or even as low as 12-41, but they have a much higher cleaner tone. I rely on audio versus the numbers. Depending on the location i hunt with RECOVERY DEEP and RECOVERY FAST on. If im hunting with a larger coil then i turn off the DEEP RECOVERY. It tends to blend signals. I hunt in auto +3 all the time, unless im somewehre where i can turn it on manual. If the sens. is higher than 22 i turn GROUND DIFFICULT off. But 90% of the time GROUND DIFFICULT works the best it really makes it more stable. It is truely an amazing machine if your looking for silver coins in previously pounded areas. I have found 37 silver coins this year alone, (159 last year)and all but 4 of them came from pounded areas. Dig everything that repeats in both directions thats a high tone. Even if its a small chirp. The etrac will also "thump" on really deep silver or marginally deep silver that is on edge. If it "thumps" but the numbers jive dig it. I cant tell you how many "thumpers" that turned out to be deep silver coins ive found in the last two years. BUY A 6 INCH EXCELERATOR COIL I can not say that loud enough. Ive dug silver dimes 9" deep with this little coil, its amazing. It will out-perform an 11"Pro coil any place you take it, and its not even close when it comes to trashy areas, plus it makes you slow down and hunt an area methodically. Slowing down is the key to pulling goodies that others have missed. The only draw back that ive found on the etrac is the auto sens will sometimes drop the sensitivity really really low. Ive had it drop it to as low as 7. But normally it runs around 18-22. It takes a bit getting used to, but i found it easier to use then the DFX. That thing had to be adjusted every time i turned it on. Not the e-trac, you turn it on an go for the most part. Ok Ive rambled on long enough i could go on for two or three paragraphs, If you have any questions feel free to drop me a message.
