Hit the road for Kingston, New York, at 7:30am, and arrived at the rendezvous site at 9:00. Met up with Frank (Fmerg), and we were hunting our first farm field of the day at 9:30am. A long 5-hours and two-more fields later, I called ‘Uncle.’

The absolute BEST find of the day for me was my own cell phone! After about 2.5-hours in the first cornfield, we detected our way back to the cars about a quarter-mile away. When I got back to the car I reached down and found my phone had dropped out of the holster!!!!!!

To put my damp, brown, underwear in perspective, I had just spent two flipping hours covering about a mile of cornfield, and the phone could have been anywhere. Frank, thinking quickly, calls the phone and - what? I heard it ringing!!! It was 20-feet away. An OMG moment, and a valuable lesson learned – Cell Phone IN pocket or backpack from now on!

Today I was the bug, and I hit the windshield hard! A bullet and a lead whatizzit, that I thought was a musket ball when I dug it. Maybe it’s an old fishing weight? The golf ball was out in the middle of field #1, just sitting there. We hunted a total of three- fields in five-hours. Frank pulled a musket ball and two buttons. I pulled a lot of huge iron, a zipper and a bullet. I felt like Charlie Brown on Halloween... “I got a rock.” My disappointment was about to be assuaged however!

At the end of the hunt, Frank presented me with a very special gift for my better half. It is an 1832 Large Cent that he dug out of the field we were hunting today, on a previous hunt. To say I was surprised and touched would be an understatement! :notworthy: A beautiful day with a good buddy - and a great field detecting mentor, in the warm fall sunshine of the Catskill’s! :headbang:

good thing it was the phone and not the pin pointer :laughing7: been there and done that too, good hunt Terry

Had that kind of weekend myself. The hunting was hard and the finds were few. I guess if we hit it out of the park everytime the game would get to boring.

I've had similar results hitting spots near Kingston.
It's especially frustrating when you KNOW there's good stuff nearby.
Hope you can make it out for another hunt or two while your'e in the area.

UPDATE: Five-Hours in a New York Cornfield..

Thank You Everyone! The mystery lead item may be a colonial Indian trade item, that was worn as a necklace. Here is a photo of some examples that were sent to me by another field hunter! :headbang:
