Welcome to the forum! It could be part of a weather vane, although many are copper. Does the top look like it has been flattened by hammering in the ground or not? Breezie

Breezie, thanks for the reply. It is made of iron like a pipe. It is flatten on the pointed end then split and shaped into a point. In a 1936 photo I can see what appears to be one in front of a tent with a flag staff in it. The open end has been hammered on as if driven into the ground.

TX, With the open end looking hammered, it more than likely was driven in the ground. I've seen similar to yours at cemeteries holding flags of past military people. Nice find, Breezie

I am trying to date this item. Do you recommend a reference book or source. I think it is either civil war or ww l.

I've already looked in several of my CW reference books and couldn't find it. I'd recommend searching on GOOGLE and type in things like: WWI in ground flag holder, WWII in ground flag holder, cast iron flag holder, etc., then click on IMAGES and see if you see anything that looks like what you have. As I posted earlier, I've seen flag holders in cemeteries, and what you have may be one of those. If you find a match, be sure to post pics of it. Good luck :icon_thumright:, Breezie

It's called a Guidon, and the point that is placed in the ground or in a holder is called the Ferrule. Military flags have been, and still are attached to a Guidon. If it's really a guidon ferrule it could be fairly modern an only 30-50 years old.

If this was CW era and flag related, it would most likely be made of brass. It is certainly not a weathervane piece. Unfortunately it is often easier to tell what it is not than to figure out what it is.

Best Wishes,
