Found about 6 inches down in a hay field. Plain on the front with a back mark of BEST SUPERFINE across the top and COLOUR around the bottom.

Nice flat button!
Why would you think it is French? Most likely British manufacture. I have many variations of that back mark, but not that exact mark.
