Hi all, found this silver-gilted flat button with no back mark a few weeks ago.
This is the first flat button I have found where the mold from the button goes almost half way up the rear shank.
Was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about this button, such as Type, and Era (Time Frame)
Trying to get a date on this old site.
Last photo includes other items I have found in this area, all in the same close vicinity.
Post Rev NY Militia button, Thimble that says Toujours Fidele (Always Faithful) (was told this is late 19th century thimble), Several rusty square nails (but I believe the one in this photo is brass, which is a first for me.)
Any information is appreciated.
The NY militia button is the oldest item I have found in this area (circa 1800-1815), but not sure if this showed up at a later date, or if this site is really that old.
These items came from ontop of a bluff that is on a body of water. Im thinking a possible home or campsite, but I also have some other wilder ideas starting to go thru my head.
Thank you

Hi Bonepicker; yoour buttons both date to 1800 - 1820 as does all of the items in the picture. What has my interest is the EXCELSIOR button. It is a veery RARE one. It is easily in Extra Fine Condition with minor pitting. I would value it starting at $200 easy. Please post a picture of the Reverse so I can see the Makers Mark and Shank Type ok. Then I can pin it for you. PEACE:RONB
PS: DO NOT EVER clean it ok. thanks. :leprechaun-hat:

Thank you for taking the time to post Barker, and thank you for the help with ID.
I actually posted the Excelsior button here on Tnet a couple months ago, which is where I got my id.
There was no visible backmark, You could barely see the 2 rings. I was eager to find the backmark, I should have been more patient. I read some posts in the cleaning and preservation section of this forum, and did a little flat edged toothpickin. Still no backmark after toothpicking. I regret even messing with it, guess I had to learn the hard way, which is typical for me. :BangHead:

Nice buttons
Thanks Gatorboy. I keep going back to this site. Lately the finds are getting to be less and less. Each of those finds were discovered on separate trips. Sometimes I only find a rusted square nail or two. Not sure what else could be there, but I keep thinking there is more, and could possibly lead to some greater discoveries. I just keep wondering how this stuff could have gotten there.

The square nails are almost a sure sign of an old structure we've built layer upon layer one on top of the other most of our biggest cities were built on top of Native American village sites to begin with it's not a big stretch to imagine there was an old structure there at one time if it's drying up for you there maybe try being creative and think of life back then and where you would have needed to spend time maybe somewhere close to the next available water source would be a good spot to try
