Found it at about 7-8" or so in a super heavily hunted area! It read a wishy washy 50-60 on the ATP.
After giving it a light bath and tooth picking I noticed that it seemed like it still has the thread on the back. Is that possible? I assume so if it is buried fast and deep enough to not get a lot of oxygen. Anyone?
Does anyone have an idea on age or history on this button?
Happy digging!

I've seen thread survive fairly often.

Still amazed every time I see it.

Yes, had quite a few myself.

Early 1800's for the age. Have found several myself and seen quite a few posted over the years, so not as rare of an occurrence as one would think, but neat to find without a doubt.

Very cool that thread survived, looks like a nice one too

Congrats!

As others have said, finding a flat button with thread attached from this period (1800-1820) is not all that uncommon. Here's another example .....

One of the most knowledgeable members on the site ( TheCannonballGuy ) told me that if conditions are perfect, the acidity in the soil begins to break down the solder used on the shank and the resulting chemical Inundates the material in direct contact. Thread or material directly touching the shank will be protected.

Sometimes for whatever reason things just beat the odds. Since 2004 I have dug approximately 100 of these French marines buttons which date in the range of 1720s-1750s. In the beginning just getting one with a shank was tough enough, but as I dug more the shanks did start to add up, but what I never expected to happen (last year) was to get one with so much thread and even a small piece of the original cloth. This find was no different than the rest, at least from my point of view, but for some reason the thread just survived.

a friend found some cw buttons with thread and cloth still in the buttons, 4 of them all together! if the button got pulled off or fell off should the tread be there? great stuff though! spencers are rim fire (fyi)
