Flintlock action from 1800's campsite

RickyP and myself hunted an old campsite that Ricky had discovered long ago this weekend. We go there as often as we can and he said we have found over 50 buttons there so far and none of them are civil war. There have been 3 or 4 outstanding buttons found that date from 1790's to 1815 or so. Nothing newer than that so this weekend I got a signal on myMinelab ETrac with a 15 in WOT coil that said 12 inches. I started digging and Ricky came over with a big shovel and start pitching dirt. About a foot down we pulled this action out and still had a signal. Well at a measured 24 inches we came to what was left of an old metal bowl or plate that was so fragile and thin that we couldn't do much with it. Anyway, we ended up finding 6 more buttons over the weekend with one of Rickys a nice one. I'm looking for someone who knows flintlocks that might be able to identify what this action came off of. Thanks for looking!

Steve ;D

Nice find and effort to bring it back...........but it's been in the ground too long :-\

An archaeologist would say it should have been left in the ground to " preserve" it for future generations.

that's a fantastic find. with a little imagination and a little searching, I think you've got a mid 1800's percussion cap flintlock action, like this one

theres no such thing as a "percussion cap flintlock action". what he has is the lockplate of a flintlock with the priming pan, frizzen, and some of the internal works. >:(

Re: Flintlock action from 1800's campsite

I knew what he meant when he made the comment.....We also have found nothing newer than the very early 1800's either....nothings in the 1850's...its' been teens or earlier.

What the heck is a percussion cap flintlock?

Re: Flintlock action from 1800's campsite

I kinda wish it would have been a percussion flintlock. Now that would have been a find for sure and worth some serious bucks!!! Lol!!!!

Re: Flintlock action from 1800's campsite

I guess my attempt at nailing it down wasn't perfect, sorry

Re: Flintlock action from 1800's campsite

Hey Sniffer, you were probably right about it being from a pistol by it size, the other was an oversight! Lol!!! I still wish it could be indentified!

Re: Flintlock action from 1800's campsite

I think the rust melted it away, awhile ago

Re: Flintlock action from 1800's campsite

Re: Flintlock action from 1800's campsite

Thanks for the nice comments. Ricky went back to this site this weekend and found the first 3 riinger bullet thats been found there. Everything else has been a ball. He also found part of an old lantern and some other stuff. This small site continues to produce something everytime we go there. It just makes it fun!!!!
