Folks,

I thought I'd post this native pendant to get some opinions....found about 5 or 6 years ago at an old park....there's a native reserve nearby by so there might be a connection.

It's a tad smaller than a silver dollar...hollow center and small hole top and bottom.....it's irregular shape tells me it's hand crafted and probably has a bit of age to it.

I've yet to see anything similar posted here or on other forums.

ARRC,

You're the sort of guy I figured would get a kick out of this find....lol..

Funny thing is for a land detectorist I find a fair amount of gold and silver jewelry but that pendant is one of my favorites regardless of value.

ARRC,

The back is basically a repeat of the front with the native chief facing the opposite direction....since the lighting is crappy here after dark I'll try to take a couple of pictures of the side tomorrow with natural light.

Yeah... gold is ... well .... gold. :)
Always nice finding anything cool...
But I look at it like this...
Finding jewelry like rings and braceltes charms etc... is always nice...
I always look at these finds as... "paying the bill" ...
BUT when you find stuff like this... your finding the "high" of imagination... :)
That transfixed mental state that keeps you thinking about it...
That mystery piece... is the cream of the crop for finds to me...
Lots find rings and coins...
But few find this... and perhaps... none but you have ever found one of these... whatever it is. :)
This makes the "rarity" factor for me... which floats my boat.

Always nice to find Plat ... gold... silver... copper...brass... bronze... Just no aluminum. :)

ARRC,

My wife has some native blood mohawk and her great great grandfather was quite the celebrity back in the day and when the time comes we'll donate the pendant to their museum.

Here's a picture of him shooting the Lachine rapids he was the chief of the tribe back in the day.

It is definitely not hand crafted. It is either die struck or cast, pics of back would help.

gunsil,

Here pictures of both sides.....I took a picture of the edge also showing one of the holes but came out rather blurry.

It appears to me that it could be a metal trade bead, some tribes would get these from the fur trappers and they would be strung together to make a "Coin style" bracelet or with many a necklace.

JRedHorse,

Thanks for your input....it's much appreciated and very plausible....with the irregular shape it probably has quite a bit of age to it.

Like relevant says it appears to have been copied from an American coin and it would have been made long after the days of trapping and trading with the Indians was over.
