Any idea or seen one of these before. Maybe it was from the 20's or 30's. Don't know! It's about half the size of the photo.......

Well, with the helmet and the ball - I'm thinking it might be football. Do you know how it might hook on? Can you show the back?

What I'm trying to figure out is if it was a pin for playing football, or is it a pin for being a good tackling player, or a pin for a good runner?

Whew!

You should see what comes up with "football pins" - football pin-ups!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll never find the pin at this rate :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Looks like a watch fob to me and looks pretty heavy to be a medal. Not saying it is not because they did make things better back then than the cheap models today. The loop at the top looks like it is heavy enough for the fob strap and too heavy for a ribbon. Good luck in identifying it. Nice piece just the same.

Those sure do look like some "rowdy boys".

Nogoodniks, CLEARLY up to shenanigans.....

Probably smoking marijuana cigarettes and sitting in parked cars with loose women, no doubt..

Rock and roll music may be all well and good Plehbah, but respect for your elders is a tune we can ALL dance to.

This medal is pretty thin but you can't bend it with your hands. I'll post a couple of more pics of the back which is not solid. It was a stamped piece. Any more ideas? I still think it was from the 20's or 30's......I may be wrong but if you notice there were no face guards on helmets which was a long time ago. Who knows?

Nice Find ~

This is from Wikipedia ...

By the mid 1940s, helmets were finally required in the NFL. They were still made of leather, but with improved manufacturing techniques had assumed their more familiar spherical shape. By the 1950s, the introduction of polymers brought the leather helmet era to an end. The face mask was also introduced around this time, reducing the number of broken noses and teeth.

Attached photo is of an original 1940 Washington Redskins helmet and sport card.

Bob,

Thanks for your info. I guess it would be safe to say that this little medal was from no later than the forties as leather helmets went out of style starting in the 50's. Bob, I sure used to drink lotsa Big Chiefs growing up, wish they still had them!

Thanks again,
Steve ;D

Upon closer inspection of the item, and then comparing it to various styles of other older helmets, it "appears" that the helmet on the watch fob looking item "may be" what they refer to as a "Dog-Eared" helmet from about 1915 -1920. Notice in the photo below the "floppy looking" ear guard part (almost detached looking) similar in design to the one on your item, but which doesn't seem to be present on the later helmets. Thus a "possible" 1915-1920 date, or earlier! :dontknow:

P.S. The player holding the football sure has a "Huge" thumb! :icon_scratch:
