Seems everyone had a great time today at Fort Daniels near Dacula, GA. We were trying to determine if oral tradition and topography had allowed us to determine the 1813 fort location or not. Further work may involve GPR and limited excavation.

I can say the Dr. D'Angelo and I are pleased with the number and quality of the items found. We should be able to determine if we want to continue with the project further when the items are processed in the lab.

Personally, I did a few 20'X20' grids as the primary MD'er and many more as the second pass MD'er and found a lot of modern nails and iron. I was also able to find one lead ball, though, which I'm quite please with. Both are pictured below. Along with some of the people involved.

Other items found were 2 buttons, many clip and square nails, a number of lead balls of various calibers, and a cache of bells. I'll let the individuals who found those items post pictures if they want. Don't want to steal their thunder. ;)

Thanks again to all who participated.

Great pics, and it looks like you have it under control. How many are involved with this?

We had about 10 MD'ers from Tnet (Stone Mountain club and a few independents) plus about 15 members of the local archaeological society helping map and bag. The society members also spent about 150 hours clearing and gridding the site so we could do all this. A really great team effort by all.

Sheldon, just wanted to let you know that as one of the independant MDers, I had a great time on Saturday, and appreciate the opportunity to help in locating Fort Daniel. I don't want to speak for anyone else, but I think the guys from the Stone Mtn. club enjoyed the day as well. Great bunch of people out there. It was noted more than once, that it was nice to see MDers and archaeologists working hand in hand to help discover and possibly preserve history. Can't wait to hear of any results, especially from the cache of (colonial era?) bells found at the end of the day.
Regards, Gpurs.

Nice to see MD'ing being used for more that just fun, hobby, and collecting. That is all I do it for right now. Would love to get involved in something like that.
Keep up the good work.

I found the cash of 11 small brass bells. Deepest one was about 10" to just below the surface. I think that they were actually modern, maybe from a wind chime or something like that but that's my opinion. I did shoot a picture of one of the better flat buttons that were found by one of our club members (Stone Mountain Treasure Hunters).

Usually discriminate out nails but dug a lot of cut and square nails this hunt.

It was interesting and fun. We hope to be able to help out again in the future.
