Managed a short hunt Sat. between the rain. Found this 1842 Large cent with a hole in it :'(. Put in some clay just to take the picture. Also found an old shotgun shell manufactured by UMC Co. (1867-1911), old lipstick holder??, and an old???, part of a necklace or something. The old picture was the old Pennsylvania railroad which is on the other side of the old farmhouse , about 1000 feet where I am now hunting. There is a soybean field between the 2. There is an old side walk that runs down to town past the old farmhouse. This is where I am focusing my attention now. When the beans are out I will be in there searching as there was an old house there (which I just found out) from old maps of the town dated 1867. Thanks Merf for the link.

i would love to find one of those ! hole or no hole :o great finds and congrats

Congrats on the large cent! That is an awesome find hole or not.

If that hole is a little squared at all, it was used as a washer to hold wooden shakes to a roof when the shakes split and fell off the roof. Nice finds

Congrat's on the large cent.
You're making some amazing finds with the Ace 250. Have you tried cranking up the sens. on it yet?

Yes, doing some max sens. Still learning this detector. That's what matters!!!

Nice bunch of finds. I think the lipstick holder is actually a tire valve stem cap.

Isn't that kind of big??
Does it have any writing on it? The name Schrader, maybe?
'll clean it up when I get back from Canada Thursday

I have found several in the past, in Wyandotte, Michigan, all with square holes almost dead center. I asked some old timers living in some of the homes along Jefferson Ave. what happened to these L.C.'s? The homes in that area were built in the early 1800's. They told me that when their ancestor's were repairing leaks in their wooden shake roofs, they had found out that the shake had split and because they did not like the BIG pennies :icon_sunny: that they would put the 2 halves of the shakes back together and drive a "square nail" through the penny, making a copper washer out of it.. Also, another oddity when I was hunting the "Devil's Strips" I was digging up 1/4 pieces of L.C.'s they were cut into quarters with metal snips :'(, I thought, hmmmmm...... Further research told me that when the sales tax was 1/4 cent, that the merchants accepted Big pennies cut into 4 pieces would do just fine. Because the big pennies were too heavy to carry a dollars worth in their pockets, some also drilled or punched holes in them and strung them on heavy string and wore them around their necks. That is why alot of the L.C.'s you now dig up have some type of holes in them.... Now you know the rest of the Story. Not GE
