Shoot, my pics did not load. Also, Gator, I have never ever ever ever posted anything, artifact or not that was found out of context. Maybe I should not do this, but I take it that others only post pieces that were found in context. maybe you can see the "L" notch now.

Hey NC I dont think yours is a nutting stone looks more like a grinder to me like a Mortar.

The handful Ive found in Ohio they used sandstone, heres one I found that was found in context with woodland artifacts.

The one and only I have found here in Ga was made from Sandstone as well. I wonder why they used it you would think it would be gritty in their food.

Easier to bore into sandstone, the one i posted prolly was not used for food prep it had reddish staining in it imo most of them werent for cracking nuts, in Ohio there called cup stones, but seems like most ppl call em nutting stones kinda like calling a bevel a spinner its a name that stuck for whatever reason.

I like cup stone much better.

I'm not sure of your understanding of the word context. Scattered field finds are no longer in "context" they may be in a higher probability area but have all been separated from their original resting place. to truly be in context.. an artifact needs to be still locked in its "matrix" ( the undisturbed soil that was ground level at the time the artifact wound up where is it was) in direct Association with the objects around it like a time capsule. Field finds are all out of context. They may be very numerous in some areas however they are all considered isolated finds by definition. since they are no longer in thier original resting place and no chronological story can any longer be put together by their placement. Here is an example..... If I found an archaic point next to a soda bottle that doesn't mean they were drinking Pepsi a few thousand years ago.

Ok, when I say "in context" I'm talking about places that obvious artifacts have been found. I never have posted a rock that wasn't found where points have been found.

I knew what you meant... 8-)
