Today I was in a local park when two gentlemen from the park service approached me. They wanted some help finding some sprinkler heads that have been lost for several years. They gave me the general area and it only took me about 15 minutes to find the lost sprinklers. The men were extremely grateful and began fumbling in their pockets for money. I told them that I was just helping out and to keep their money. I gave them my phone number and told them to call me anytime they needed help. I had a great day even though I only found about 50¢!

That is the way to promote our fine hobby! Great Job. :occasion14:

Excellent ! Nice to see this "hobby" get some positive exposure (especially to park officials !)

Way to go, very thoughtful of you. Hopefully it pays off and they do not interfere with your future hunts in the area.

awesome stuff right there. i always ask folks when im in that kind of situation if there are any older places/homes that i could metal detect at that they know of. i have been amazed at some of the opportunities that have come my way by asking. most of the time, they just wouldnt think of it otherwise.

Great story!! Perhaps one day they can point you in the right direction or give ya a heads up when they do a project and move some old dirt around!!! Awesome!!!

Good job, you and the rangers

Good for you.
They will remember you from now on... if you always make sure to say hello when back there...

I am friends with park rangers everywhere... all over this state.

I have made it a point to know who what where and when for many years.

Before I ever detect a park... I locate a ranger... police/sheriff officer... or FWC...

And ask for the "scoop" concerning MDing in that park.

And always volunteer my help.

It has opened many doors...

And I have met some really cool people along the years.

I'm with arrc.while I would rarely check in ahead of time(let sleeping dogs lie)I wait till I'm near one and ask if there is anything I should"keep my eye out for"
It actually paid off...a city park maint.guy I have talked to before came up to me last winter and asked if I would let him know if I find some keys, all small on a clip.I said if I find them I want a high five, then reached into my pouch and handed him the very keys he was hoping for.found them an hour earlier.

I dig a story like ops....makes it all good for all of us..:occasion14:

I have gotten to be friends with some rangers and they will take me in the parks that most people don't get to see anymore. Like where old homesteads were or where an important event may have happened many moons ago. Keep up the good work.

Another great post and doing good service for the community

Good on ya- way to really help our hobby!

Must be something in the water today, everyone racking up their good deeds for the day.

AWEOME! You just scored an open door, that's a WIN!

I use to hunt this one park... it had areas that the ranger permitted detecting in... and an area that was prohibited...

I had made friends with the head ranger and several others over my time there...

I was near the prohibited area... he stopped and got out and came over to say hello and check out what I found...

I had just started and had only found some minor change... and while standing there he asks if I had been in the area that was off limits... I said no...

He said... before people get here and see you... go ahead and go into the area... for an hour...

He turned and said... "just tell me if you find anything good ... And if it is over 50"

MAn I could not walk into there quick enough...

After an hour... there he is pulling back in...

I found a crapload of old 30/30 shells... bottle caps... military food cans... military belt... and a ton of quarters...
My Garrett 2500... aka "The Quarter Killer".

He just smiled...and said... come back in the morning and hunt the rest before anyone gets here.
Heh
MAde my week...
Did not find anything major... but was cool knowing I had the only perm. :)
We rather... my girl got to hunt too.

Great job! I am encouraged by all of my fellow T-Netters who are helping to keep our hobby in a positive light. Sub 8-)

A friend of mine and myself had a similar (good) experience also with the local "rangers".

Right behind my home (about a mile actually) up on the South Mountain there is one of the old CC roads built back in the depression years.
Since it is so close,,and unpaved / unmaintained , we run it when we have the chance in our jeeps to look for game or just to get out of the house.

Well this one day we were on a mission to gather up some rocks for a border I was doing. We never got to get any though due to seeing piles of recently dumped house type stuff everywhere.
Looked like someone moved then everything they didn't want to move they loaded up and did a "midnight dump" along the road.

We totally filled the 10 x 10 x 2 trailer ,,,heaping, then figgered "keep going" and do a pick up to the next intersection, (10 miles or so).
Literally we picked up almost a ton of discarded household stuff, then all the other trash we got while just driving along.

Almost at the intersection we decided was the jumping off point, a ranger DNCS I think,,,came flying up behind us,,,stopped us,, then commended us for our actions.
Seems we were "reported" for "suspicious" activity,,,, PFFFT ..
The next part almost made me dump it though. We asked him (Ranger) if we could put all the crap in THEIR dumpster,,, he originally said no,, but I said "Well this could just end up anywhere ya know".
"We didn't HAVE to do this and it's only the "right" thing to let us dump it at the station". He thought a minute or two,, then reluctantly agreed to allow us to take it there.

Hit

Just doing what I / we can to keep this road the way it's supposed to be.
