Sometimes it's as simple as the way the metal shears when the planchet is cut, the copper nickel outer layer can kind of drag over the inner core.

It's worth 25 cents ... That's not considered a mint error. But, don't be discouraged, & keep looking. There are websites with knowledgeable collectors who will help you identify what's valuable & what's not ... try CoinCommunityFamily ... "good eyes", BTW...

It was actually my ears. It sounded different in my coins. That's how I have found all the silver quarters in my spare change through my life, they sound higher pitched.
