I was thinking that since the loops are steel and the core is softer material perhaps it was some sort of break-away link such that if the strain on the chain or rope was too much, this link would break away saving the chain or rope from snapping. Just a thought but who knows....

It's a great idea, but my first thought was... "ouch!" That wouldnt be too safe!

I would think the last thing you want a chain to do under stress is "break away" or something... ??? ???

Whatever this "thing" is, it can't be too uncommon, because this is the second one I've found so far. Can someone I.D. it for me, please?

Bluezman, I ran across your old post doing a search on oxen shoes. The part in question was IDed as a water well chain pump part, in case you are still wondering..

Actually, I didn't know that MJ. Very interesting.
I have to go with my first thought on the "thing" though.

They are tie-downs for alien space ships.
When they think they are alone, they let their guard down a little.
So when someone stumbles onto their landing sight, they get startled, and in their rush to escape, they forget to haul in their anchors. This of coarse breaks the tie-downs off the outside of the ship. There should be anchors and chains in the area also.
They love farms.

Yep...I've seen it many times.

Ima ;)
:laughing7: That's what causes those crop circles I suspect...

I see that bigcypress nailed it, but I did come across a resource we might find usefull in the future:

http://www.oldhouseparts.com/index.htm

These people deal with the sale of all kinds of old parts and might be able to ID or even buy some of the old things us MD'ers find. ;-) They have a contact us section and might be able to ID some of our more interesting what is it's. Unless it's a Korean game piece, of course :)))

Thanks bigcypresshunter, you're the man! :notworthy: Looks like Charlie P. almost had it, those pumps needed mechanical power and probably got it from windmills. . I had given up and forgotten.

As a matter of fact I haven't been back here on the forum in quite some time. I received an email that my messages would be lost if I didn't back them up, so I followed the link back here.

My pursuits have taken me elsewhere, but maybe it's time for me to get back out there, and get some dirt under my fingernails again. Spring will be here soon. :icon_sunny:

I seem to recall seeing this same U.F.O. (unidentified found object) a few years back on this forum. It looks like some type of fuse-link, like the type that would open up and seperate in a fire, allowing the two "eyes" to break loose, closing off access to something. That would explain the heaviness of the metal, and the fact that it is non-ferrous. Just a guess though . . .

In looking at this item again, I am under the conclusion that it is trip link .. or in this case it would be called a trip bell off of an old check row corn planter chain. I have found them in a field still attached to the wire.
