This piece is listed as R9 (1-4 known) in the "Non-Local" section of Schenkman's Civil War Sutler Tokens. I asked Rich Hartzog of www.exonumia.com about it, and— assuming it's not a problem piece with major damage: holed, scarred, corroded, etc.— he estimates its value at $700-900.

It does have a small hole at edge which was used for hanging on a string which was typical in those days as pockets were in short supply, how does that affect the value?

Honestly, it all depends on the collector. Some are purists and will wait for years until they get a token in what they consider acceptable condition; others collect by type, town, etc. and are interested more in the history. So, don't take the first offer... shop it around. And if some guy really tries to run it down because it's holed, and isn't too polite about it either... you can always say, "Okay, it's not perfect. But it is an R9— show me a better one!" ;)

PBK, I'm sure you have seen ads from Bob T. the Arizona specialist wanting rare arizona territory and other western tokens and offering to trade the moon for them. I once sent him a dug unique - previously unknown - Arizona territory token for his offer. He declined to make an offer and said that he would wait for a better one. He knew that it was UNIQUE. What better one? Five years later it is still unique. It's laying in the recycle tubs with my flood debris and probably in worse shape than when he rejected it. Until another is found it just keeps getting more expensive. I hope to finally get the last of my coins and tokens disinfected and put in protection this winter and stored in safety deposit boxes. exanimo, siegfried schlagrule
