A better detector wouldn't help the condition of that coin ;D. But still nice to find!

An LC in your own yard? Hope you are in good with the neighbors, you might have a hot spot out the front door! HH, Mike

great find! unfortunately thats the way that copper coins come out of the ground around here as well. the soil is hard on them. since its already messed up, i would carefully buzz it with some electrolysis to see if i could get a date off of it. its not like its worth much in that condition anyway so you wouldn't be harming its value. at least you would satisfy your curiosity.

putting it in a potatoe might work...look in the cleaning and preservation forum

The better detector would be to get under the 6" of fill that has been put all over my yard the large cents ive found have been where a pool was put and where the driveway was put in my detector won't go much deeper than 4 inches thats the only reason i wish i had a new detector

hey danger, thats a great find in any condition. and in your own yard!! i have heard good things about the new garrett ace 250. good depth at a very good price. i have the gti 1500 and love it. it is a bit more money though. there are other good detectors reasonably priced and you might find one here on TN in the buy sell trade section. happy hunting and welcome to TN. gf2 in tx

Hey Dan,
Actually, your detector might be working pretty good. The coin looks like
it had a piece of iron sitting on top or below it (the rust), and your machine
picked it up. Was it a good solid signal? Did you find any old iron with the
coin? Very nice find, and in your own yard!!!! Way to go!!!

My detector work's ok the only issue i have is depth ive buried coins 6" down and it dosent pick them up 4" and less its very accurate. The signal on the large cent bounced a little between a quarter and fiftycent piece i imagine it was due to the rusty deposit's on it but i didn't find any iron with it. It may have been resting elswhere till the people that owned the house before me put in a pool and moved the dirt around. It is nice to be able to find old coins in the back yard

Dan, nice find your yard is a bit older than mine. You need to do Mikes yard, I had breakfsat with him the other day and he told me about you. I told him to have you come down and we could meet. We go out all over and you can come along. Ask mike where i live he knows, you probly see my truck thru town, I am on Stevens ave. look for the LESCO truck. As far as the cemetery i would stay away there are a few older folks in town that will get all up in arms. I did alot of hunting at Maple grove but stayed on the fringe and had permission. we also did the Welman house and as soon as the town moves to the firehall we nee to go back and hit closer to the foundation.
Lets meet and we can go out with a few of my other friends. Seeker told me today that he taked in chat with you.

Man! Just not fair.

Only coin I've found in my current yard is one dime, and that was from the 1970's. Own 20 acres in the back and that I could mine for scrap iron, but no coins out there yet. Found a 26" circular saw blade and flywheel, though.

You guys are so lucky to live where you can find older coins, I can't point to a house within 25 miles that was built before 1860... sigh....
