Hello all,
I found this bottle on a riverbank leading to the lake. It has two seams, rounded lip area, a wire tie of some sort, very heavy thick glass, and rounded bottom. Any ideas on what it is or age? Thanks.

Re: found bottle.....any help?

I know the guys in the "Bottles and Glass" section can ID it for you.

I have seen them, but don;t know what it;s called.

Nice Save, Congrats ! :icon_thumright:

Re: found bottle.....any help?

The point behind the rounded bottom was to ensure that the bottle was left on its side so that the wired down cork would not dry out and shrink allowing the contents to loose carbonation and/or evaporate. The typical rounded base bottle was made of thick heavy glass and used for carbonated soda, mineral water, and in particular, ginger ale. They were mold blown with the lip being finished by hand.
These type bottles are commonly referred to as "round bottom sodas" or "ballast bottles" since it is believed that many of them were imported from England as "ballast" (weight) in ships returning to the United States.

If it has bubbles in the glass, it's an old bottle.

Thanks that information sheds some light on it. My bottle does not have any markings but is very similar to those bottles.

No bubbles except for in the lip area of the bottle.

That is a gorgeous old bottle, and well worth displaying. Finding them with the wire intact is not very common. Because of the small gauge wire used, the bottle is usually found with the wire long since rusted away.

Thank you. I was wondering about the wire. I figued if it was old it should have rusted away. I am lucky to have found one intact! ;D
